The contest invites people to use their own creativity to create homemade ads for the Doritos brand, the top two spots will air during the Super Bowl XLVII broadcast on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013. • No. 1 spot on the USA TODAY Ad Meter wins you a cool $1 Million
    • No. 2 two spot on the USA TODAY Ad Meter wins you a $600,000 prize
    • No. 3 spot on the USA TODAY Ad Meter wins you $400,000

Ram Krishnan, vice president of marketing for Frito-Lay North America added, "Over the past six years, our fans have created thousands of Doritos ads, dominating the USA TODAY Ad Meter year after year and making Doritos the brand to watch on Super Bowl Sunday. Every year, our fans deliver for us, so this year we’re bringing them a contest grand prize that we know will be a true game changer. The opportunity to work on a blockbuster film like ‘Transformers 4’ is an experience we know will help catapult our lucky winner to the big time."

Consumer-created Doritos ads have ranked in the top-five of the USA TODAY Ad Meter the last six years, and in three of the last four years scored the No. 1 ranking, the campaign is clearly one of the greatest ad campaigns ever created.

  • Toronto's Ad Industry Put On The Gloves and Get In The Ring For Charity

Toronto's Ad Industry Put On The Gloves and Get In The Ring For Charity

Jennifer Watts, account director at Brandworks International, left, and Scott Morris, media manager at Mindshare Media MICHELLE SIU PHOTO Ad Agency Wars III is set for Wednesday in Toronto!

A year ago, Scott Morris’s typical Friday wind-down with colleagues would have involved beer, pizza and more beer.

Morris, the media manager at Mindshare Media Canada, still ushers in the weekend with members of Toronto’s advertising community. But for the past three months their fellowship has been devoted to toughening up for a charity boxing event.

Agency Wars III, which takes place at the Arcadian Court this Wednesday, will see 24 men and women from 14 local ad agencies square off to raise money for Ronald McDonald House and the National Advertising Benevolent Society.

The participants, who train with professional coaches, actually become qualified amateur boxers sanctioned by Boxing Ontario for the sold-out event.

One of the final training sessions found a broad range of ad industry employees, from art directors to CFOs and copywriters, drilling down at The Boxing Loft in the Entertainment District.

Morris, 31, had spent last Friday fine-tuning ideas for his Ford Fusion portfolio for next year. But come dusk, he was focused on his upcoming bout with Jason Kan, motion graphics designer at Teehan+Lax.

Even before stepping into the ring for their three two-minute rounds, Morris has already earned bragging rights: he’s shed 35 pounds since training began in September and can now execute at least 40 pushups and an eight-minute mile.

“I’ve never done anything like this in my life,” said Morris as he took a break from light sparring inside the Adelaide St. W. gym. “I feel good. I feel confident. I wake up everyday thinking I’m going to throw up from the nerves, but I just channel past that and stay focused.”

Abs aside, Michael Clancy has seen the long-lasting benefits of exposing his competitive industry’s desk jockeys to the even more cutthroat world of pugilism since he founded Agency Wars three years ago.

“Knowing what to do under fire is really important,” said Clancy, executive creative director for Brandworks. “If you can get into a ring, then you can walk into any boardroom in the world.

“In the ad business, taking care of your stress is really important. And boxing is a spectacular way to do that because you’re not in your head. You have to be very much aware of your body. And hitting a bag, doing that kind of strenuous work, the footwork involved, takes you out of the office and puts you into a very physical place where you do what you’re told. You don’t have to think, and you’ll be fine.”

Clancy, 62, who took out his opponent in the third round, aided by former junior featherweight champ Steve Molitor in his corner, when he fought in 2010, has been the oldest competitor to date in the event, which is taped by Fight Network for later broadcast.

“It’s kind of like a fantasy camp for boxing,” he said. “You get to walk in with your entourage, you get to pick your music and it’s televised.”

Head coach Chris “Mr. Showtime” Johnson, a 1992 Olympic medallist, finds the ad folks “very dedicated.

“They’re hungry. They want it almost to an obsessive stage,” he said. “They believe in perfection, but perfection in a sport like this does not come in three months. It’s taken me almost a lifetime.”

After a 20-minute skipping warm-up, Johnson led the group through various punch combinations, all the while pumping them up for fight night.

“If you get a chance to hit someone, hit ’em hard, because if they get the chance they’re going to hit you hard,” he exhorted.

From his ringside perch, returning announcer Jeromy Lloyd, Marketing Magazine’s online editor, has seen a fight or two stopped for split eyebrows and swollen eyes. He’ll be decked out as usual in a rented tux, but without a catchy “let’s get ready to rumble”-style tag line.

“I’m so scared of trotting on someone else’s intellectual property and getting the event sued,” he explained.

The creative team at Brandworks came up with the nickname “Da Boss (a.k.a. The Shot-caller)” for one of their fighters, Jennifer Watts, and selected their Christmas party favourite, LMFAO’s “Shots,” as her entrance music.

Now endowed with an eight-pack and the ability to do “at least 20 real pushups,” thanks to the rigorous 12-week training, the 6-foot-2 account director is pumped to face off against Mindshare media manager Christina Mirabelli.

“My strategy,” said the trash-talking Watts, 30, “is to keep her back with these long arms so she does not get near my face — and punch her in the head.”

  • William Shatner in the Priceline Negotiator's Last Deal Commercial

William Shatner in the Priceline Negotiator's Last Deal Commercial

William Shatner is the star of the newest Priceline commercial, but this ad is going over to well with the American Bus Association. They are asking the ad be pulled from being aired, apparently seeing Shatner in a bus as it goes over a bridge that ends in a rather dramatic explosion isn't good for the bus biz.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The American Bus Association is asking that Priceline pull an ad that shows its longtime spokesman William Shatner dying in a fiery bus explosion, saying that it believes the ad is in bad taste.

The ad, which started airing Monday, is an effort by the online travel service to drum up attention for its published-price offering, which is much less well known than its name-your-own-price service.

A company spokesman stressed that while they are killing off Shatner's "Priceline Negotiator" character, they still have the former "Star Trek" star under contact as a celebrity spokesman.

But while Priceline is happy with the spot and the buzz surrounding it, the trade group, which represents inter-city bus lines as well as charter bus services, is upset, saying it "damages the reputation of our industry."

Group spokesman Dan Ronan concedes that he doubts any potential customers will be afraid to take the bus after seeing the spot, but said "it portrays the industry in a bad light. We're protecting our brand and our reputation."

Neither Priceline nor Shatner had any immediate response to the group's objection.

The trade group also invited the 80-year old Shatner to ride a motorcoach and see how safe and comfortable they are. It pointed out that Shatner will be appearing next month in an autobiographical one-man show on Broadway, where a large proportion of customers travel by bus.

"In fact, it is estimated that nearly one third of theater tickets are purchased by group tour and motorcoach customers," said the group's statement

  • Reebok Skyscape Runaround featuring Miranda Kerr

Reebok Skyscape Runaround featuring Miranda Kerr

DDB New York just launched a new global campaign, featuring supermodel Miranda Kerr, for Reebok's new Skyscape shoe...and looks looks stunning in it.

Official Press: Reebok, the fitness brand at the center of women’s footwear innovations for more than 30 years, today revealed its new campaign with international supermodel Miranda Kerr for its new shoe, Skyscape. Created using new materials and techniques for a feeling of unparalleled comfort, the international style icon kicks off a global integrated marketing campaign for the shoe, which is so comfortable, you’ll forget you have it on.

An everyday shoe for active and casual wear, Skyscape features 360 degrees of foam comfort in a fun, flirty silhouette that pairs perfectly with jeans, skirts or yoga pants. The challenge behind Skyscape was to create a stylish shoe that would keep women comfortable when they are on their feet all day running errands, meeting friends, commuting to work or going to the gym. Rather than just thinking about comfort underneath the foot, Reebok wanted the foot to be enveloped in comfort. In the research and development phase, Reebok looked to other industries for inspiration. For the pillow-like design of the sole of the shoe, the inspiration came from the home furnishings industry, while for the upper, the inspiration came from the lingerie industry – and specifically, molded foam bras.

The Skyscape upper is crafted using the same manufacturing techniques and processes as molded foam bras, but using materials that have been optimized for the stresses and strains placed on the feet all day. The seamless, 2-way stretch material creates a soft, comfortable envelope around the top and sides of the foot, while allowing for natural foot movement and breathability. The sole of the shoe resembles cloud-like pillows, and provide cushioning, comfort and flexibility for all-day comfort. The flirty lace-up silhouette comes in a broad range of colors to match any outfit or mood.

A fully integrated marketing campaign featuring style icon Miranda Kerr will launch the shoe, which hits retail outlets globally in March. With TV, print, retail, PR an digital components, the campaign works on all channels to demonstrate the way Skyscape feels and will have women everywhere wondering about the shoe that’s so comfortable, you’ll forget you have it on. Both the film and static elements of the campaign playfully center on this idea and were brought to life by legendary fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon, who captured the static imagery, and famed music video director Dave Myers who shot the TVC. DDB New York is the creative agency behind the campaign.

“I’m on the move all day so it’s important to have a pair of shoes that balance comfort, style and practicality,” said Miranda Kerr. “My Skyscape shoes are a wardrobe staple that come with me everywhere I go, they’re the perfect in-between shoe to wear to work, running errands or to the gym, and because they’re lightweight and compact they’re also great for travel. Skyscapes come in a range of fashionable colors so there’s a pair for every outfit!”

Martina Jahrbacher, Head of Reebok Walking, commented, “Reebok has a rich heritage in developing product especially for women and of looking outside of the footwear industry for the newest techniques, and I am proud to say that we have done it again with Skyscape. It took us more than two years to complete this shoe, as we were dedicated to creating a shoe that will perfectly support our active female consumer and, at the same time, was unlike any other shoe in the industry. At Reebok, we’re constantly looking for new ways to develop the best footwear and the innovative processes we’ve incorporated to develop Skyscape have created a shoe that you really have to try on to believe.”

BlackBerry Takes A Seat In New York's Barclays Center With A New Ad Deal

BlackBerry inked a two-season marketing deal with the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. home to the NBA Nets and the NHL's Islanders, according to a report by the New York Post. The report, citing an industry source, said the deal is valued at $1 million to $5 million.

BlackBerry, which late last month launched its new Z10 touchscreen smartphone in the U.S., will get prominent ad placement and an “experiential” area where customers can try out the smartphone maker’s devices, Mike Zavodsky, the Nets vice president of new corporate marketing, told the Post. BlackBerry will also get a suite-level lounge. Zavodsky added that BlackBerry ads will be seen from “street to seat.”
BlackBerry’s ad deal with the Brooklyn arena follows a new marketing push that started with a $4 million Super Bowl commercial, as the Canadian company attempts to regain market share. BlackBerry also reportedly reached a $12 million deal with Formula 1 racing.

Other than this Blackberry hasn't been pumping out as many new commercials as we thought they might, so loyal BlackBerry owners took it upon themselves to create their own, below is a fan-made ad that takes us through a brief history of the device...too long, but pretty good. Harrods of London Get's Sexy With Ice Cream With New Advert

A new advert for the famous department store Harrods of London combines food and fashion to create an intriguing persona for the famous department store. The sexy ad above entitled "Style To Savour" features the Harrods Ice Cream Parlour and three lovely models, a lot of lips and of course ice-cream. Harrods better known for its luxury boutiques and culinary-chic cafes, the company is looking to expand its market of loyal customers by creating a timeless, “acquired” look that pairs well with fine dining, which according to industry expert, Brittany Mills, will help them in the long run:

Food and fashion are both an acquired taste and when a person likes a particular restaurant or designer, they are loyal for a lengthy amount of time. Fine food is not a fad or a trend and compliments that lifestyle of Harrods’ target buyers…I think Harrods will successfully be able to extend its reach by going after a complimentary industry that has a large, loyal following.

  • "The World Is Listening" The Grammys Ad Campaign

"The World Is Listening" The Grammys Ad Campaign

The Recording Academy® and TBWA\Chiat\Day have teamed for the sixth year to promote the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards® with the ad campaign "#TheWorldIsListening." The 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards (www.grammy.com) will be held on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network.

"Slammed Door" featuring Rihanna above and below is "Soundcheck" with The Black Keys and voiceover by Dr. John

"#TheWorldIsListening" campaign features both established and up-and-coming artists across a variety of print, out-of-home and digital communications, as well as three TV commercials. The first commercial, "Slammed Door," tells five-time GRAMMY® winner and current nominee Rihanna's story. The second commercial, "The World is Listening," features artists including the Kills, Snoop Lion and Taylor Swift alongside emerging artists such as Grace Potter, Kishi Bashi and Dam-Funk. Two-time GRAMMY winners and current nominees the Black Keys will appear in the forthcoming commercial titled "Soundcheck."

At the heart of this year's "#TheWorldIsListening" campaign is a newly created Web site, www.grammyamplifier.com, which allows musicians to share their tracks via SoundCloud for a chance to have their music tweeted out by a panel of musical icons, including Linkin Park, RZA, and Snoop Lion. While social media has given musicians more ways to share their sounds than ever before, the online music space is increasingly fragmented. As a result, it gets more difficult for emerging artists to be discovered. "#TheWorldIsListening" campaign and the GRAMMY Amplifier aims to help solve this problem by exposing new artists through social platforms — with the ultimate goal of discovering artists with the potential to be the next generation of GRAMMY winners..

"This year's campaign highlights the raw emotion and desire of the artist's journey, and is amplified via social media in order to draw more music fans into an engaged music conversation," said Evan Greene, Chief Marketing Officer of The Recording Academy.

Patrick Condo, Creative Director, TBWA\Chiat\Day, said, "Sure, the music industry embraces fame — but music always comes first. From RZA to Rihanna, to the young girl taking her first piano lesson, it's their passion for the craft that will, ultimately, lead them to the public and then fame. This year's campaign celebrates this passion and the talent as burgeoning artists embark on that quest for fame."

All of the campaign materials prominently feature the hashtag #TheWorldIsListening, a first in GRAMMY history and a testament to the role of social media with regard to the GRAMMY telecast. In February 2012, the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards generated more than 13 million social media comments making it the biggest social media event in the history of television at the time.

  • Mack Trucks - Born Ready

    Mack Trucks - Born Ready

Mack Trucks is a cultural icon—a brand that has become part of the American lexicon...a symbol of toughness and strength. After all, how many people have felt like they've been “hit by a Mack Truck!”

Since WWI, when the bulldog became the official symbol of Mack Trucks, the consistency of the brand image was often sacrificed for other business priorities. Inconsistencies of usage abounded, diluting the proud, strong, iconic brand. Mack Trucks' agency of record, VSA Partners, recently embarked upon a comprehensive brand strategy and brand revitalization program, pulling together the best, most potent parts of Mack Trucks identity--the bulldog and the wordmark--to create a carefully refined and coherent brand expression system centered around an authentic purpose and promise. The result is an iconic American brand that is now positioned to deliver consistently on a well-earned reputation for speaking honestly and directly, for working harder than the next guy, for making incredible products that inspire the imagination and for loving every corner of the trucking industry.

  • A Collection Vintage Dickies Menswear Print Ads

A Collection Vintage Dickies Menswear Print Ads

Nuggets of Nostalgia: DickiesStore Discovers Marketing Material from Decades Ago Having recently happened upon an archive of advertising artefacts, DickiesStore is happy to release a wealth of ad campaigns from as far back as the 1930s. This treasure trove of relics has got many retrophiles revelling in the rich history of this couture-centric print media that has been unearthed.
Although the sentiment and commitment to designing top quality workwear and fashion forward casual wear has remained consistent throughout Dickies’ history, these newly discovered gems clearly trace the ebb and flow of advertising and marketing methods over the past 90 years.
The Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company faced challenging times in its early years, as the Great Depression was crippling the US economy. But as sturdy and tough as the workwear they were designing, the company weathered the storm and set a benchmark in the industry, marketing themselves as the all-American clothing brand.
As the 50s came around a great emphasis was placed on Dickies being the premium retailer of attire for the “man of production”. On a societal level times have changed dramatically since then but at that point [see image 2] advertising clearly addressed the fact that Dickies manufactured workwear that was easy wearing, easy looking and easy to maintain.
Dickies advertising of the 1960s shifted focus somewhat, catering towards the cool kids on campus. The brand identified that scholars wanted to look good and feel comfortable both in and out of class.
As they introduced imagery of motorcycles and sports cars, the marketing material from the late sixties that DickiesStore recently uncovered clearly spoke to an audience who led a care-free but fashion conscious lifestyle.
In the late 70s and 80s the Dickies brand broke through with a range of funky apparel that really identified with the pop generation. Dickies exemplified what it meant to be hip, cool and colourful. This sense of fun went hand-in-hand with their continuous pursuit of producing durable and comfortable clothing. Dickies also began more powerfully introducing their iconic logo — the horseshoe – into their campaigns and although it represents a solid, reliable product, when it comes to the manufacturing of top quality workwear, Dickies isn’t in need of any extra luck. via: DickiesStore Blog.

How To Tastefully Advertise A Funeral Home | Leo Burnett for Co-Operative Funeralcare

The Co-operative Funeralcare, part of The Co-operative Group, unveils a new integrated advertising campaign today.

The campaign, which includes TV, press, radio, outdoor and digital activity, has been devised by Leo Burnett – lead advertising agency for The Co-operative. It is the agency's first output for The Co-operative Funeralcare, and has been developed following extensive consumer research.

The TV commercial was directed by Peter Cattaneo, Oscar-nominated director of The Full Monty, who has also directed ads for brands including Volkswagen, McDonald’s and The National Lottery.

In the ad, a bereaved wife is taken on a detour on the way to her husband's funeral, passing along a bridge that looks down over his favourite fishing spot, where fellow fisherman bow to pay their respects. The narrator tells us “a funeral is more than just flowers, cars and music”, and at Funeralcare it's about “finding those personal touches”, such as changing the route to prompt a happy memory.

Actress Katherine Kelly provides the voiceover and real-life Funeral Director, Lynsey Ward, from Funeralcare’s Bolton funeral home also stars. The first 40-second commercial will air on ITV and a shorter 30-second execution will also be circulated.

Lorinda Robinson, Head of Marketing, The Co-operative Funeralcare said: “The advert focuses on personalisation and The Co-operative Funeralcare's ability to deliver personal touches to make a funeral more memorable and respectful. The business has been a pioneer in TV advertising in the funeral industry and the new advert highlights how, as the UK's leading Funeral Director, we ensure that every funeral we arrange is completely personal and unique.”

MICROSOFT UNVEILS FIRST EVER MULTI-PRODUCT CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN
18 October 2011: Last night Microsoft launched its first ever global, multi-product advertising campaign designed to showcase the unique everyday experiences that can be realised through its latest products and services. With an investment of over £5.5 million, it encompasses Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox for Kinect and Office to demonstrate an interconnected family scenario. The first in a series of 30-second TV ads aired at 20:15 during The Gadget Show on Channel Five and will run until the end of January.

The campaign, led by US ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, includes activity across TV, digital and search and will roll out globally across 35 countries including UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Over the last year Microsoft has launched some of the industry’s most innovative and compelling products, such as Windows Phone and Kinect. These, combined with Windows and Office, provide a unique experience for the consumer. The campaign showcases the interconnected story through visual and relatable moments in everyday life for families around the world. It will provide a deeper understanding of how the products work together and inspire audiences to stay connected this Christmas.

The inaugural advert shows a family witnessing some embarrassing ‘dad dancing’ to Dance Central 2 on Xbox 360 Kinect which is unknowingly captured on his daughter’s Windows Phone. She shares the footage with her brother who edits and remixes it in Windows Live Movie Maker on his Windows PC, before uploading it to SkyDrive – where it is beamed to friends and family around the world. The living-room scenario showcases the connectivity of Microsoft’s suite of products and their integration on consumers’ everyday lives.

Paul Davies, Director of Marketing Communications at Microsoft UK commented: “In the run up to the festive season our thoughts turn to keeping in touch with loved ones. The great technology from Microsoft enables people to do this in new and exciting ways. Our latest campaign demonstrates just some of the things that that families can do using Windows PCs, Windows Phones, Kinect for Xbox, and Office to communicate with each other. Not only is it simple and easy, but the technology can enable them to stay connected, often in entertaining and surprising ways.”

  • Qui Marketing — Reverse Thinking, But Who Really Cares?

Qui Marketing — Reverse Thinking, But Who Really Cares?

As part of a rebranding campaign, the Montreal agency Oui Marketing has launched a video on the advertising industry. In less than a week, it was viewed over 210,000 times, mostly in Quebec and in France, and dozens of Francophone blogs have shared it with their readers. Comments have been almost unanimously rapturous; the video exceeded all expectations.

Beyond transitory trends and real changes in habits, one element endures: the balance between creativity and strategy. It was this fact that led the agency to rethink its vision. Its conclusion: Relevant audacity™.

The audacity of standing out from the crowd, of heightening the experience and generating affection for a brand.

The relevance of being contemplative, precise and efficient, forever mindful of return on investment.

Together, they create the innovative solutions that build allegiance.

This philosophy is at the very heart of the video. It addresses all the criticism about advertising and—with a little reverse-thinking sleight of hand—issues a call for responsible advertising.

INTERAC - Be In The Black via Zulu Alpha Kilo

Toronto ad agency Zulu Alpha Kilo creates a humourous TV spot featuring AC/DC's Back In Black celebrating how good it feels when you pay with your own money with Interac debit versus paying with credit and going into debt.

Press: After landing the business last spring, Zulu Alpha Kilo is launching a new brand platform for the Interac brand and the organization behind it.

The Interac Be in the Black™ platform extols the benefits of using your own money for everyday purchases.
“We want Canadians to know that the end of the month doesn’t have to seem like the end of the world,” says Chief Creative Officer and CEO of Zulu Alpha Kilo, Zak Mroueh. "When you use your own money instead of credit, you can simply enjoy what you buy instead of worrying about paying it off."

The 360 campaign consists of TV, out-of-home, video pre-roll, and standard and rich media banner ads – along with a social promotion – meant to inspire positive conversations around the many benefits of using Interac products and services.

“It’s crazy to think that people are using credit for everyday purchases like groceries, or a cup of coffee,” says Ron Smrczek, Executive Creative Director, Zulu Alpha Kilo. “In our launch spot, we enlisted AC/DC’s iconic rock anthem, Back in Black, and some over-the-top pyrotechnics to bring the swagger back to the notion of using your own money.”

The creative is supported with a national digital media campaign that is handled by Media Experts. French adaption for the Quebec marketplace was developed by TANK. The campaign will run into the spring.
