PBS KIDS GO's Design Squad Nation Inspiring Community of Creative Kids

WGBH's Emmy® Award-winning Design Squad Nation is introducing a revamped website to inspire the next generation of engineers. The online community is fueling kids' spirit of inventiveness, providing a destination where they can discover firsthand that engineering isn't something done by boring grownups in hidden labs: it's solving problems in creative ways...everyday, and all around you. Full press release below.

PBS KIDS' Design Squad Nation® Introduces Revamped Site To Inspire Community of Creative Kids
-- Emmy® Award-winning Team behind Design Squad Launches Extensive Updates and New Features to Inspire Next Generation of Engineers --
(Boston, MA, Tuesday, October 2, 2012) — WGBH announced the official launch of the revamped Design Squad Nation®, an online community that provides kids with a forum to express their adventurous, do-it-yourself spirit and share their creative ideas with other like-minded kids. Hot on the heels of a renewed DIY movement, the PBS KIDS Design Squad Nation website is the latest iteration of a franchise that includes a four-season run of the Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning TV shows Design Squad and Design Squad Nation. Design Squad Nation can be found at http://pbskids.org/designsquad/.

    Why it's important

By nature, every young kid is a budding engineer: building contraptions with glue and Popsicle sticks or sketching an idea for an automatic pet feeder. But as kids get older, they have fewer moments in their daily lives where they can develop those critical thinking skills. Design Squad Nation fuels kids' spirit of inventiveness, providing a destination where they can discover firsthand that engineering isn't something done by boring grownups in hidden labs: it's solving problems in creative ways...everyday, and all around you.

    How it works

Kids can join Design Squad Nation for free; earn points by contributing ideas, sketches, and photos of the projects they dream up; and keep track of all the things they have made in their own profile pages. As users contribute more to the site, they earn more points and move up in rank from "Newbie" to "Phenom." The goal is to frame the design process as a game, encouraging a virtuous cycle that gets kids to continue sharing their own ideas while cheering on others to do the same.

Kids ask great questions that deserve great answers! On Design Squad Nation, engineer-hosts Nate Ball and Deysi Melgar respond to questions in a series of short videos posted online. One week, Nate will add his own ideas to kids' sketches of waterpark rides. The next, Deysi will share what's so amazing about NASA's Curiosity Mars rover. As mentors and guides, Nate and Deysi show kids how engineers see things through a creative lens, inspiring kids to do the same.

Video made for the YouTube Generation

Into fashion? We've got a video about how engineering connects to it. How about cooking, sports, camping, or dancing? We've got those, too, and we're rolling out more videos all the time-from cool stunts to how-tos. We know that kids have many interests, and that their favorites shift from one thing to the next. No matter what they are into, Design Squad Nation has a video, project, or inspiring example of how engineering can further their interests.

    The team behind the site

A passionate team of educators, Emmy® Award-winning producers, and website engineers at WGBH created Design Squad (the TV show) and Design Squad Nation. And that team is constantly looking for new ways to share the power of engineering and inspire kids to dream big. Their efforts are garnering wide acclaim. Design Squad Nation just earned a 2012 Emmy Award in the category of New Approaches-Daytime Children's.

"More than a website, Design Squad Nation is a growing community built around the belief that through creative problem-solving and engineering, any kid can make a difference," says executive producer Marisa Wolsky. "We currently are hard at work to make this community bigger and stronger, inspiring a new generation of engineers to dream big and change the world."

Design Squad Nation invites the next generation of great thinkers to get involved at pbskids.org/designsquadnation. Viewers also can follow Design Squad Nation on Facebook and on Twitter.

  • Jeep "Whole Again" Super Bowl Commercial

Jeep "Whole Again" Super Bowl Commercial

For last two years, Chrysler has created quite a buzz with their Super Bowl advertisements. In 2011, their “Made in Detroit” commercial featuring Eminem was particularly well received, as was their 2012 Clint Eastwood-narrated “Halftime in America” spot. As a result, many were anxiously waiting to see what the automaker had up its sleeves for this year’s game. Predictably, Chrysler continued the tradition of tugging on the heartstrings of the American public with their fan favorite “Farmer” and “Whole Again” commercials.

Featuring the narration of Oprah Winfrey and opening with her words, “We wait. We hope. We Pray. Until You’re Home Again,” on the screen, Chrysler’s “Whole Again” commercial is an advertisement for their Jeep brand—more specifically—for the partnership between Jeep and the United Service Organizations (USO). Throughout the two minute spot, the commercial depicts military families going about their lives while missing their loved ones who are overseas on active duty. The message Oprah relays is that like military families, the United States, as a nation, will not be whole again until all of our service men and women return home. Until then, however, Jeep—through its partnership with the USO—proudly supports “our nation’s heroes.”

As Chrysler well knows, patriotism is the one emotion that unites like nothing else. In fact, it’s hard to resist a commercial like this—one that celebrates the sacrifices that service families make—especially when those sacrifices are so clearly depicted on screen. The question remains, however, as to whether it’s right to capitalize on these sacrifices. Though it’s easy to forget, Chrysler’s main purpose behind the “Whole Again” commercial is to sell more Jeeps. And while their secondary purpose may very well be to advertise their partnership with the USO or even to give the USO some free publicity, presumably, they’re only doing this to sell more Jeeps as well.

Regardless of Chrysler’s true motivation, for a brief moment, the “Whole Again” commercial brought our attention back to America’s real heroes and away from the athletes who are too often idolized as such. For doing that, and for not featuring a Jeep until at least midway through the ad, we’re thankful and are already looking forward to next year’s Chrysler commercials.

  • China as the world centre

    China as the world centre
To begin with I suggest to look at a picture in the big permission.Chinese servants
There is such Chinese artist Lui Liu which is known enough in China. In particular, the picture «Chinese servants» — gives very good understanding about world system in understanding of Chineses in which centre of the Universe without fail settles down Celestial. For the interested China far not a secret, that Chineses the nation haughty though Chineses will not say directly to you it.

Plot strange enough. Naked and not so naked white aunts in the foreground, some sit on the earth. And Chineses also it is not visible, only are looked through somewhere on a background. At once there is a question on the picture name. Where, actually, servants. It is known, who the Chinese language is extremely rich on symbols and hints that promoted a wide circulation of allegories not only in the literature, but also in the Chinese art as a whole. I do not speak about riches of the numerology, leaving in an extreme antiquity.

For understanding of a plot of a picture, it is necessary to mean, that it is written in the beginning of 2009 when the world crisis generated by the USA, has captured a planet.

China, the unique country which crisis has avoided and on which, the West rests hopes, that China will pull out them from an economic crisis.

Therefore three plates up to the top filled with meal, it is possible to consider as a hint — guzzle the western barbarians, China is rich enough not to allow to die with hunger and you. Clear business, that at barbarians cannot be any culture of meal. They do not own the sticks, therefore the best for them is hands and like a dog from the earth.
    NoodlesMeat

Any country in the world has no the history comparable on duration with history of China. Any nation has no the number comparable to number of Chineses. Now supervises over China Hu Jintao. Pay attention to the Chinese on a background and compare to photo Hu.

Hu Jintao in image Chinese the hard workers which fruits of works feed also the western rabble in the foreground which in any way does not appreciate it, spilling meal on the earth.
    Hu JintaoPresident
By the way, about the USA. Quite probably, that the grown fat aunt in the picture centre, just also is image of America.
    ObamaObama
Interesting analogies are traced and with other silhouettes.
    IslamIslam
    PutinPutin
One more hint contains in the form of the poured stain. Compare a stain to a USA map.

The broken egg too is simple so, it symbolises the broken financial system of America.

    Pigs
    USA, map

I think, that in a picture weight of other allegories which to the western sight simply are not clear. Thus the picture name sets thinking — who will be actually the servant in this world?

Toyota Marks A Turning Point In Last Ad From Droga5

When Droga5 got in touch with New York to ask if they wanted to pitch on a commercial to launch the new hydrogen powered Toyota they jumped at the chance to be involved in such a pioneering point in the history of motoring. Droga5 then received a truly brave script that engages the viewer in the provocative and absorbing debate surrounding this sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
    Brief
The brief called for simplicity, elegance, and sophistication in the film, whilst ensuring a palpable sense of a human hand in the visual storytelling. This felt like an incredibly refreshing and inventive way of marketing a new car and was something we were thrilled to be a part of. The sensibilities of the project were completely aligned with our creative approach and working methods as a studio.
    Approach
Working closely with the creative team at Droga5, our winning response was to craft a rich visual journey that breathes life into the film’s dialogue in a variety of visual ways, whilst maintaing a seamless flow and coherent aesthetic.
The line was used as a repeat motif and the visual element that leads us through the film. Beginning with the carbon line representing our current use of archaic fossil fuels, through the crumbling carbon city until it’ is finally reborn as the blue ‘hydrogen paved highway’; Toyota’s vision for the future of car propulsion.

  • BBC Sport Advert for London 2012 Olympic Games

BBC Sport Advert for London 2012 Olympic Games

The trail is based around the concept of 'Stadium UK' — bringing the nation together in a huge Olympic Stadium to enjoy the BBC's comprehensive coverage of the London 2012 Games. Designed to be used across all the BBC's television, radio and digital Olympic content, it features the specially commissioned music First Steps by Elbow.

BBC comes under fire recently for their animated ad promoting the 2012 Olympics for copying the Lloyds TSB ad. Ironically both promotional spots were created by the ad agency Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe Y&R. The BBC’s trailer features the UK as a huge stadium with athletes preparing and competing for the Games which start on July 27.

Lloyds TSB’s ‘For the Journey’ adverts are known for their animated characters and utopian landscapes set to the classical piece Eliza's Aria by Elena Kats-Chernin.

The BBC advert featured cartoon swimmers in lanes created by buoys cast out by a fisherman, a BMX rider on a cliff edge and track cyclists racing around quarries.

Here's our new London 2012 TV ad (above). The ad brings together some of the favourite characters from previous Lloyds TSB adverts and shows how we're bringing London 2012 closer to communities all across the UK.

And, the ad features a new version of Eliza Aria, the great piece of music that's become as synonymous with Lloyds TSB TV adverts as the familiar voice of Julie Walters.

BBC 2012 marketing head Louisa Fyans said: ‘Animation enabled us to deliver to this brief and helped us create something really special for the BBC's London 2012 campaign.’

It was seen by millions – as Gary Lineker and his cohorts pulled in a peak of 15.5 million, averaging 13 million for the game.

The advert — which uses the tagline ‘wherever you are, never miss a moment with the BBC’ — will be used in the title sequence for the BBC’s Olympics TV coverage.

A Rainey Kelly spokesman said: ‘It is the culmination of a lot of hard work and we are very excited to feel part of the inspiration that this summer will bring.’

  • 'Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation' at the British Museum

'Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation' at the British Museum

The British Museum will open a major exhibition presenting a history of Indigenous Australia, supported by BP. This exhibition will be the first in the UK devoted to the history and culture of Indigenous Australians: both Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders. Drawing on objects from the British Museum’s collection, accompanied by important loans from British and Australian collections, the show will present Indigenous Australia as a living culture, with a continuous history dating back over 60,000 years.

'Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation' at the British Museum
Bark painting of a barramundi. Western Arnhem Land, about 1961 [Credit: © The Trustees of the British Museum]
The objects in the exhibition will range from a shield believed to have been collected at Botany Bay in 1770 by Captain Cook or one of his men, a protest placard from the Aboriginal Tent Embassy established in 1972, contemporary paintings and specially commissioned artworks from leading Indigenous artists. Many of the objects in the exhibition have never been on public display before.

The objects displayed in this exhibition are immensely important. The British Museum’s collection contains some of the earliest objects collected from Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders through early naval voyages, colonists, and missionaries dating as far back as 1770. Many were collected at a time before museums were established in Australia and they represent tangible evidence of some of the earliest moments of contact between Aboriginal people, Torres Strait Islanders and the British. Many of these encounters occurred in or near places that are now major Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. As a result of collecting made in the early 1800s, many objects originate from coastal locations rather than the arid inland areas that are often associated with Indigenous Australia in the popular imagination.

The exhibition will not only present Indigenous ways of understanding the land and sea but also the significant challenges faced by Indigenous Australians from the colonial period until to the present day. In 1770 Captain Cook landed on the east coast of Australia, a continent larger than Europe. In this land there were hundreds of different Aboriginal groups, each inhabiting a particular area, and each having its own languages, laws and traditions. This land became a part of the British Empire and remained so until the various colonies joined together in 1901 to become the nation of Australia we know today. In this respect, the social history of 19th century Australia and the place of Indigenous people within this is very much a British story. This history continues into the twenty first century. With changing policies towards Indigenous Australians and their struggle for recognition of civil rights, this exhibition shows why issues about Indigenous Australians are still often so highly debated in Australia today.

The exhibition brings together loans of special works from institutions in the United Kingdom, including the British Library, the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. A number of works from the collection of the National Museum of Australia will be shown, including the masterpiece ‘Yumari’ by Uta Uta Tjangala. Tjangala was one of the artists who initiated the translation of traditions of sand sculptures and body painting onto canvas in 1971 at Papunya, a government settlement 240km northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Tjangala was also an inspirational leader who developed a plan for the Pintupi community to return to their homelands after decades of living at Papunya. A design from ‘Yumari’ forms a watermark on current Australian passports.

This exhibition has been developed in consultation with many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, Indigenous art and cultural centres across Australia, and has been organised with the National Museum of Australia. The broader project is a collaboration with the National Museum of Australia. It draws on a joint research project, funded by the Australian Research Council, undertaken by the British Museum, the National Museum of Australia and the Australian National University. Titled ‘Engaging Objects: Indigenous communities, museum collections and the representation of Indigenous histories’, the research project began in 2011 and involved staff from the National Museum of Australia and the British Museum visiting communities to discuss objects from the British Museum’s collections. The research undertaken revealed information about the circumstances of collecting and significance of the objects, many of which previously lacked good documentation. The project also brought contemporary Indigenous artists to London to view and respond to the Australian collections at the British Museum.

Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum said, “The history of Australia and its people is an incredible, continuous story that spans over 60,000 years. This story is also an important part of more recent British history and so it is of great significance that audiences in London will see these unique and powerful objects exploring this narrative. Temporary exhibitions of this nature are only possible thanks to external support so I am hugely grateful to BP for their longstanding and on-going commitment to the British Museum. I would also like to express my gratitude to our logistics partner IAG Cargo and the Australian High Commission who are supporting the exhibition’s public programme.”

Football Fans Are Going To Hate The NFL's New On-Field Ads

If you watched Thursday night's Ravens vs. 49ers preseason football game, you probably noticed the awful on-field advertising any time either team got in the end zone.

According to BizJournals, Toyota is now the "exclusive auto partner" of the Niners as part of a multimillion dollar deal. Part of the agreement is that Toyota will sponsor the red zone — the area between the 20-yard line and the end zone — at San Francisco's brand new Levi's Stadium, meaning a massive, distracting graphic will appear on the screen any time a team reaches that section of the field.

Luckily, Toyota's red-zone advertising will show up only on the local, KPIX broadcast of preseason games; it is not a national deal. Still, you have to imagine that this is a glimpse of the future, and one that NFL fans aren't going to be particularly pleased about.

  • New Limited Edition Heineken Star Bottles

New Limited Edition Heineken Star Bottles

Heineken introduces new limited edition star bottles, the first time they've redesigned it's packaging since 1946.

The new "Star Bottle" design (above) is for U.S. consumers and scheduled to be on shelves nation wide by March of next year. The James Bond Skyfall limited editions bottles are below.

"The newly designed Star Bottle allows Heineken to take a huge step forward in the globalization of the brand, which started with our 'Open Your World' marketing campaign and our more recent draught program," says Colin Westcott-Pitt, VP of Marketing, Heineken USA. "The Heineken bottle has gone through a number of progressions but has always maintained its core iconography that has become a symbol of upscale premium beer, and this philosophy will remain the same with the new Star Bottle design."

"The Star Bottle will be available in 12 oz. and 22 oz. sizes and features a taller, thinner shape giving it a more modern and premium look. The bottle also features an embossed thumb groove that improves grip and encourages people to hold the bottle at a lower point, keeping the beer colder. While the bottle is changing, consumers can still expect the same smooth, full-bodied beer with a complexity that balances fruity notes with mild bitterness that has been synonymous with Heineken for more than 100 years."

What do you think about the new bottles?

Table of Content and Hooligan Help Imagine The Day Cancer is Cured

New York-based advertising upstart Interplanetary recently tapped Table of Content and Hooligan to help create two spots for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). "Today” (:60) and “Soccer” (:30) were directed by Rick Knief and edited by Eric Carlson.

The brand image campaign serves as a call to action with the promising hope of a cancer cure — thanks to treatments advanced by LLS. The spots will broadcast on network and cable stations across the nation on donated airtime. Actor Michael C. Hall (Dexter), a Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor himself, narrated the spots.

“The creatives (Bruce Lee, Jill Mcclabb, and Chris Parker) and agency producer Terry Debonis were all open and collaborative throughout the process and a joy to work with,” remarks Rick Knief, director, Table of Content. “And by teaming up with Hooligan, and having TANQ handle all the graphics and visual effects, it was one-stop shopping for Interplanetary.”

"Interplanetary has a lot of great editors and directors in their rolodex, so we were honored that they turned to us for such an inspiring campaign,” adds Eric Carlson, senior editor/partner, Hooligan.

“Today” imagines a day everyone hopes to remember: the day cancer is cured. Big news (not yet revealed to the viewer) sweeps across the city, halting everyday moments in homes, laundromats, diners, offices, gyms and train stations. Crowds gravitate towards TVs, computers and cell phones before the spot’s big reveal: a newspaper headline reading, “CANCER CURED!” The news culminates on a Times Square billboard before the closing montage shows various characters celebrating and embracing with loved ones afflicted by cancer.

Filming “Today,” Knief aspired to capture emotions of an ordinary day becoming extraordinary.

“The vignettes needed to tell the back story of an average day, while at the same time, intrigue viewers leading up to the big news,” he explains. “I shot at 40 frames per second to give the piece a heightened reality. We all want to imagine a day when cancer is cured, what it would be like, and how it will affect us emotionally.”

“Some of these moments could have played out the whole 60 seconds,” Carlson expounds on editing the spot. “I just tried to find little eye movements, or maybe a hand gesture to best capture each emotion. The big-picture goal was communicating the weight of the coming news through all the various reactions before revealing what it actually was. We held it as late as possible to let the quietness of the imagery develop and draw the viewer in.”

"Eric’s knack for finding the best moments and organizing them in a way that allowed us to experiment and explore was critical to making these spots shine,” adds Knief. “It also made for a smooth collaboration bringing Interplanetary into the editing process.”

“It was a fun day for the crew and all of the kids,” Knief recalls. “We shot at 270 frames per second to capture and emphasize the intensity of the kids playing. The languid feeling of the images really allowed for the message, delivered through graphics and voiceover, to come through loud and clear.”

Reflecting on directing a positive campaign for such an important cause, Knief describes it as an experience he and his production team will always remember:

“This job was profoundly close to me both professionally and personally,” concludes Knief. “With myself, and many others involved with this campaign, having lost loved ones to cancer, we all came out of the job inspired with the promising hope for a cure one day.”

  • Cuprinol The Cheer it up Garden Shed Advert

Cuprinol The Cheer it up Garden Shed Advert

Today sees the launch of a new ad campaign for garden wood care brand Cuprinol. The repositioning kicks off with a charming and surreal campaign by 18 Feet & Rising, which champions their Garden Shades range, urging people to cheer up their gardens.

The first push is 'Whimpering Garden', a 30” TV ad in which an unloved garden shed is cheered up with a lick of Cuprinol.

In the ad, a couple is woken up by what sounds like a crying baby, but actually turns out to be their distraught shed. After the husband tries, and fails, to pacify the weeping shed with a giant bottle of milk, the wife produces a tin of Cuprinol which works a treat. The spot’s strapline is: “For protecting and brightening your garden. Cuprinol. Cheer it up.”

The ad, directed by Thai star Suthon Petchsuwan, highlights the emotional pull of the AkzoNobel-owned brand, which boasts a 94-strong colour range, as well as a rich heritage in practical wood protection. The spot will be on air in the lead up to the Easter and May bank holiday weekends, and will be available online.

18 Feet & Rising developed the idea behind the 'Cheer It Up' positioning, as well as the TVC and its digital amplification.

The brand re-launch also includes a new logo and new packaging across all its products, designed by Brand design consultancy Springetts, and the launch of a new website on 27 March developed by AnalogFolk.

Along with its new brand identity, Cuprinol is launching new products this year, including ‘Less Mess Fence Care’ and next generation garden shades, with four-year weather protection. In addition to the 34 existing shades, the brand is also launching 60 new colours for the Garden Shades range.

Kathryn Ledson, Senior Marketing Manager AkzoNobel, said: “Cuprinol has always been passionate about protecting garden wood and enhancing outdoor spaces. We want our new campaign to show people how simple it can be to add personality and colour to outside spaces and inspire people to ‘Cheer It Up’! With the new range of Garden Shades, it’s the perfect time to brighten up Britain’s gardens!”

Rob Ward, Head of Strategy at 18 Feet & Rising, said: “Cheer it up' repositions the category from a boring, brown chore to a colourful, emotional reward that encourages the nation to bring out the best in their gardens.”

  • Lil Lets "Giggle" and "Horny" Print Ads

Lil Lets "Giggle" and "Horny" Print Ads

As part of a brand re-launch, Lil-Lets has created a new campaign aimed at encouraging women to embrace their femininity.

Women’s bodies work in amazing ways and Lil-Lets knows why women feel the way they do during their cycle. The new campaign positively embraces this knowledge and shares it with an unexpected edge that may surprise women themselves.

Using striking headlines and intriguing insights including ‘HORNY’ which reveals that “if your period makes you feel a bit horny, it’s because your body knows an orgasm is one of the best, natural ways to ease the discomfort of cramps”, the campaign hopes to connect with today’s woman and recruit a new younger generation to the brand, as well as appealing to loyalists.

The press campaign will appear in women’s monthlies and weeklies. The digital campaign features True and False questions linking to an interactive Body iQ quiz that tests the nation’s knowledge of how the body works, including everything from orgasms to the shopping gene.

Clodagh Ward, Director of Marketing at Lil-Lets, said; “At Lil-Lets we are passionate about celebrating femininity and all there is to love about being a woman. The campaign devised by Leagas Delaney brings this vision to life and underpins what we are all about – we know that periods are a natural part of a woman’s life and we are in tune with how it makes you feel.”

Nigel Roberts, Creative Director at Leagas Delaney, said; “We wanted to create a campaign that was different to the category. Candid references to why your body works the way it does during your period has grown-up honesty to it.”

The press ads will feature new packaging and highlight key products outside of their heritage in tampons, including applicator tampons and towels.
