Tribal Worldwide-Toronto and Kol Kid Pursue The Value of Simple Play In New Ads

In an era where digital and electronic inventions are consuming hours of our lives, its toys and devices are also making an impact on the way children play. Remember when fun was governed by games and activities like Red Rover, I Spy, Couch Forts and Hopscotch?

Kol Kid is helping parents and their children put down their devices with the launch of a cool new web app (Play Engine) that generates endless, simple play ideas like finger puppets, Simon Says or how to make a homemade printing press, for example. Kol Kid is a Toronto-based children’s store, making a stand to celebrate the value of simple play and illuminate the insight that tech toys can’t always fulfill the tactile joy of simple toys. Kol Kid has also released three online spots to springboard this communications campaign and help reinforce the store’s purchasing philosophy, which is to sell toys that fosters children’s imagination and play habits.

PRESS: Kol Kid’s new campaign by Tribal Worldwide — Toronto helps parents rediscover the value of simple play

In an era where so many digital and electronic toys task kids with a touch of a screen or hit of a button, Kol Kid, a Toronto-based children’s store is launching a new communications campaign that celebrates the value of simple play.

“After shopping at Kol Kid a few times I noticed they didn’t carry a single electronic toy,” says Sanya Grujicic, senior copywriter, Tribal Worldwide — Toronto. “After chatting with Lisa, the owner, our team soon realized there was a philosophy to her store that was much bigger than just toys. Technology is fundamentally changing the way children play.”

Developed by Tribal Worldwide – Toronto, the campaign launches with three 30-second web videos, directed by Tom Feiler of Code Film, that cleverly communicate how tech toys can’t always fulfil the tactile joy of simple toys.

“I’ve always been particularly tuned into childhood development,” says Kol Kid owner Lisa Miyasaki. “I’ve never been interested in toys that do the playing for you. We’ve always carried toys that are tactile and open-ended. Toys that foster a child’s imagination and allow them to create their own play scenarios.”

Putting the spotlight back on simple play activities that many parents grew up with, Kol Kid and Tribal have also launched Play Engine. A web app that generates endless, simple play ideas like finding shapes in the clouds, Simon Says or how to make a homemade printing press, for example. The playful app harnesses the utility of technology to help parents discover hours of imaginative, play ideas. Ultimately, helping kids and parents put down their devices.

In addition to the videos and the Play Engine, Tribal Worldwide — Toronto also refreshed the design of Kol Kid’s website adding new content and in-store photography by Tom Feiler, that helps bring the store's philosophy to the forefront. Print advertising and in-store signage are being developed as well, to further round out the campaign and drive traffic to the store.

  • 30 Years of never Growing Up - Toys "R" Us Canada

30 Years of never Growing Up - Toys "R" Us Canada

This year marks the 30th birthday of Toys”R”Us Canada. As the company matures into adulthood, what better time for the brand to pledge a promise to its supporters to remain forever young.

Toronto-based creative agency Open created a film dedicated to the young at heart, be they young, old, or somewhere in between. The message is a playful reminder to never grow up and a shout-out to those who stay playful by doing the things they love. A corresponding Facebook app, called “Never Grow Up”, was created to allow users to take the Toys“R”Us oath online. After submitting their own oaths of what they will always do to stay young, a map then shows their location, along with others, to create a cross Canada portrait of the young at heart.

“The film demonstrates the things that those who are young at heart promise to always do, from playing with bugs, to keeping a sense of wonder, to rolling down hills or firing off bottle rockets. The film has a sweet side, but focuses on the lightheartedness that is inherently Toys”R”Us.” Says Martin Beauvais, Partner, Creative, Open.

“The film is also a nod to the brands’ roots and the nostalgia associated with the jingle we all know,” adds Christian Mathieu, Partner, Strategy, Open.

Bold and Playful New Ad Campaign for Playtex Fresh + Sexy Intimate Wipes Is Awesome

Playtex introduces "Fresh + Sexy" intimate wipes, designed for men and women to freshen up before and after doing the deed. The ad campaign which is getting mixed reviews from the internet community is the work of ad agency Grey, NY., is actually pretty awesome and all of us at Great-Ads love it. From the "Clean Pecker Taps It" clip above to prints that feature taglines such as: "A hard working beaver always finds more wood" and "A Clean Peach Always Gets Picked."

New IKEA Commercial Is A Bed Time Masterpiece

Ikea's newest ad campaign is a visual delight in the art of getting comfortable and going to bed. Ikea seems to understand that we don't always end up in an actual bed to sleep, but they'll keep us nice and cozy where ever we end up...sleep tight my friends.
Music is a remake of the classic song "Dream A Little Dream Of Me."

"With soft fabrics from IKEA, all rooms become a bedroom. You can curl up with my head on the pillow and pull the blanket around you, right where you need: the couch, in the tub, in the kitchen or in the hammock. Just ask one parent of young children or a couch surfer. They know that it is not always in bed as the best sleep are available."

  • The VW Volkswagen Beetle "Juiced Up"

The VW Volkswagen Beetle "Juiced Up"

THE 2012 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE OFFERS THE SAME SMILE WITH SHARPER TEETH

The Volkswagen Beetle has been many things over the years. But whether playing the role of the friendly, utilitarian car of the people, or a smile-on-wheels with a flower vase by the steering wheel, it’s also always been a single-minded exercise in progressive, iconic design. The latest incarnation of the Beetle is no exception. Although lurking beneath a shell that harkens back to the original is a machine that’s dedicated to performance and driving enjoyment.

While a focus on performance is definitely a new direction for the Beetle, innovation has always been a hallmark of the car’s personality, so Volkswagen Canada and Toronto advertising agency, Red Urban, agreed that innovation must also inform the marketing effort to launch the Beetle in Canada. To this end, much of the Beetle out of home advertising in Toronto and Vancouver offers an enhanced experience, using augmented reality (AR), a technology that allows people to use mobile devices like iPhones and iPads to see animations on the advertising that are triggered by markers embedded in the ads themselves.

The AR animations can be seen on gigantic billboards in Toronto’s Dundas Square, as well as on transit shelters throughout Vancouver and Toronto. The animations themselves show the Beetle launching itself through billboards, jumping off of a massive ramp that appears to emerge from the side of a building, and smashing through transit shelters after racing through a long tunnel that appears to be built behind the shelter itself. All the animations serve to demonstrate that this is a much more aggressive, performance-oriented Beetle than any of its predecessors.

“Previous Beetles have been kind of cute and friendly, but this one has a lot more attitude, so we thought the advertising better live up to that,” notes Bruce Rosen, Director, Marketing and Communications of Volkswagen Canada. Steve Carli, President of Red Urban adds, “The car is a nod to the past and the future at the same time, so using the AR overlay on a very traditional out-of-home media buy really seemed like a solid conceptual fit.”

The out-of-home campaign runs from September 26 to October 30 in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. In addition, an online digital campaign will run from October 26-November 26. The free app can be downloaded at vwjuicedup.ca, and people can experience the AR at home through the “Volkswagen Beetle. Juiced Up.” video on the Volkswagen Canada YouTube channel.

  • Go Daddy Super Bowl XLVI "The Cloud" Sneak Peak with Danica Patrick and the PussyCat Dolls

Go Daddy Super Bowl XLVI "The Cloud" Sneak Peak with Danica Patrick and the PussyCat Dolls

Go Daddy is one of the first 2012 Super Bowl advertisers to give us a sneak peak at what they are up too. Go Daddy's Super Bowl commercials include two spots this year, "The Cloud" features Danica Patrick and The PussyCat Dolls and what seems to be some short of heavenly angel thing, which reminds me of the Axe Fallen Angel ads.

    The official press release:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Super Bowl 2012 will mark a product milestone for Go Daddy. The world’s largest provider of Web hosting, domain name registrations and net-new SSL Certificates is known for its edgy ads with smokin’ hot Go Daddy Girls, but for the first time ever, Go Daddy is using one of its two edgy new Super Bowl commercials to specifically reference its cloud-based offerings.

Go Daddy has long delivered services “in the cloud” – providing individuals and businesses more efficient and less expensive online options. Now, it’s taking its product marketing to Super Bowl viewers with fun references to Go Daddy’s innovative offerings such as 4th Generation Hosting, known as 4GH.

The 30-second ad is called The Cloud. It features Go Daddy Girl Danica Patrick and the new Pussycat Dolls, along with several core product references in a “divine” setting. The Cloud is also Go Daddy’s most ambitious production in the company’s eight-year Super Bowl history. The storyline includes a revealing moment and an extravagant set design.

“How can we produce a Super Bowl ad that’s fun, edgy, slightly inappropriate and also speak to cloud-based products?” asked Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons. “Like only Go Daddy can … trust me, it’ll be as GoDaddy-esque as ever. Danica will surpass her most revealing Go Daddy moment, from back in 2008 when she gave us the big unzip!”

Danica recently ranked the Internet’s Most Searched Athlete and she’s also a sort of Super Bowl staple. By most observers’ count, Danica has been in more Super Bowl ads than any other celebrity, and with this year’s campaign, she will have 11 big game ads on her resume, all with Go Daddy Productions.

“Doing Go Daddy’s Super Bowl commercials is always interesting, but this year’s are epic,” Danica said. “The commercials are very funny – there’s physical humor, and in The Cloud there’s a big-time dance routine. Yes, I dance. And I’ll say this, the dance sequence is as GoDaddy-esque as it gets!”

Go Daddy’s other 2012 Super Bowl ad also features Danica, along with her Go Daddy Girl colleague and fitness guru Jillian Michaels. Like Danica, Jillian is a strong woman and successful entrepreneur.

“I like the way Bob and Go Daddy portray women as strong and successful,” Jillian said. “Yes, the commercials are edgy and hot … but the Go Daddy Girls always have the last laugh, they are the ones in control. A lot of people don’t realize this, but Bob’s executive staff is made up of more women than men.”

The 30-second ad featuring Jillian and Danica is designed to bring massive consumer attention to the.CO domain, the Internet’s most popular new domain name extension. While Go Daddy is working to keep the specifics of the storyline under wraps for now, it has said the ad features a stunning international supermodel whose world-class body drew this comment from Jillian on-set: “If I made a DVD about how to get a body like hers, I’d be a gazillionaire.”

.CO Internet S.A.S. CEO Juan Diego Calle makes a cameo appearance in the Internet-only version of the commercial, along with Bob Parsons. “Not only was filming the Super Bowl ad a fun way to spend a work day, we know it will help take dot-CO to the next level – driving more business and boosting brand awareness,” said Calle. “Last year’s Super Bowl ad helped us to finish our first year with more than one million dot-CO domain names registered by people in more than 200 countries – and made dot-CO the hottest new Web address in the world!”

Go Daddy partnered with.CO Internet for the first time in the 2011 Super Bowl with great success. As for its cloud-based products and services, Go Daddy has been in the cloud since before the term was coined. Not surprisingly though, most people have more awareness of Go Daddy’s commercial campaigns … that may change with this year’s advertising leap into the cloud.

For the Pussycat Dolls, featured prominently in The Cloud’s outrageous dance scene, 2012 marks their first-ever Super Bowl commercial and serves as the unofficial launch of the new Pussycat Dolls.

My New Style: Shabby Apple's Glacier Dress

    Body Shirt

    Body Shirt: Summer Collection

Happy Day, everyone! If it's raining as much near all of you as it is over here in New York, I sincerely hope you're all staying dry! What's the best thing to do on a rainy day, in my opinion? Online (window) shop! I love learning about new and up-and-coming stores, as well as checking in with my favorite websites to see what was recently added to the inventory (or what's on sale!).

The store where this beautiful dress came from is certainly not unknown - this is the Glacier dress from the super-popular, super-lovely website Shabby Apple! This dress is part of their Berkshire line. I love what they have to say about this line of beautiful dresses:

    Barbie's Dress

"Made for the last breaths of summer, this line embraces the Woman-in-the-wild--with basic, feminine silhouettes in easy-to-wear fabrics that provide you the ease and comfort you need for a weekend getaway, a last summer barbecue, or even a long day at the office. Slip into one and feel the joy of the evanescent summer - you'll be glad you did."

I'm sold! As I sit in my apartment shivering and watching the students battle with umbrellas in the storm-like conditions, I could certainly go for a sweet, lingering summer day! Even though this line is inspired by the end of summer, I think this dress is totally a fall piece. It's made from the "sturdiest, no-fuss poly blend," and has the sweetest pinstripe detailing. I love the pleats in the skirt. I think this dress has an incredibly-flattering shape that anyone can wear! Look at those details! So pretty and graceful. Thank you, Shabby Apple, for making such a wonderful dress.

    Suiting Up at Express

I've always loved the chic styles in the windows of Express! Whenever I need something classic and pretty for an event or a night out, I'm eager to check out what's new in the store. Right now I'm crazy about the women's suits that can be found in store or online. These tailored pieces are so flattering and would definitely make a statement.

I mean, look at how cute the Rouched Sleeve Jacket and Wide Leg Editor Pant Suit is! I think the silhouette is modern and just so classy. I could totally see myself wearing this to a job interview. Look at the Luster Tweed Jacket and Editor Pant Suit. The details on the jacket are lovely. I love the pockets. I think this suit can easily go from work to play with the addition of some fun accessories (a pretty necklace or a cute clutch).

Guess what, readers! Right now there's an Express sweepstakes taking place on their Facebook page! The Work It Sweepstakes is offering one winner a $500 Express Suiting Makeover! How great is that? Wouldn't you like the opportunity to add one of these cute suits to your wardrobe?

What Express suit do you like best? Where would you like to wear one of their suits, and how would you make it uniquely you?

Spot-on creativity by the agency joined with relatable casting by Brady, drives audiences to “pump with confidence.” Motivation has never come so easy.

  • New Limited Edition Heineken Star Bottles

New Limited Edition Heineken Star Bottles

Heineken introduces new limited edition star bottles, the first time they've redesigned it's packaging since 1946.

The new "Star Bottle" design (above) is for U.S. consumers and scheduled to be on shelves nation wide by March of next year. The James Bond Skyfall limited editions bottles are below.

"The newly designed Star Bottle allows Heineken to take a huge step forward in the globalization of the brand, which started with our 'Open Your World' marketing campaign and our more recent draught program," says Colin Westcott-Pitt, VP of Marketing, Heineken USA. "The Heineken bottle has gone through a number of progressions but has always maintained its core iconography that has become a symbol of upscale premium beer, and this philosophy will remain the same with the new Star Bottle design."

"The Star Bottle will be available in 12 oz. and 22 oz. sizes and features a taller, thinner shape giving it a more modern and premium look. The bottle also features an embossed thumb groove that improves grip and encourages people to hold the bottle at a lower point, keeping the beer colder. While the bottle is changing, consumers can still expect the same smooth, full-bodied beer with a complexity that balances fruity notes with mild bitterness that has been synonymous with Heineken for more than 100 years."

What do you think about the new bottles?

Honda Million Mile Joe Gets A Surprise Parade — and a new car

Getting to a million miles isn't typical. But neither is Joe. See his remarkable story:

Joe just reached one million miles in his 1990 Honda Accord! To celebrate this extraordinary feat, we surprised Joe with an over-the-top parade in his honor. Watch what happened. Way to go, Million Mile Joe!

Driving a Honda for a million miles is an extraordinary feat. So how did Joe do it? For starters, he's read and followed his owner's manual and maintenance schedule to the letter. He's also a stickler for fluids, he checked them weekly, switched them seasonally (10W-30 in summer and 5W-30 in winter), and changed them every 5,000 miles. He's been loyal to the same brand of oil and never let it go below a quart low.

You know how most people let their fuel go to almost empty? Joe never did. He's also a creature of habit, using only Honda air, oil and fuel filters. Joe never rode heavy on the brakes, and changed the fluid every few years. He's also replaced the fuel pump, both cooling fans and the radiator twice.

Besides his fastidious maintenance, Joe's Accord made it to one million miles because he's loved it. He's treated it with respect and always drove it responsibly. In fact, Joe has only gotten one speeding ticket in a million miles-that must be some kind of record. When it comes to driving, Joe's the man.

  • Ebay Gets A New Look

    Ebay Gets A New Look

After 17 years ebay finally straightens out their logo. Ebay announced that coming this fall we can expect to see their new logo go live.

Ebay President, Devin Wenig tells us all about it...

"Our refreshed logo is rooted in our proud history and reflects a dynamic future. It’s eBay today: a global online marketplace that offers a cleaner, more contemporary and consistent experience, with innovation that makes buying and selling easier and more enjoyable. We retained core elements of our logo, including our iconic color palette. Our vibrant eBay colors and touching letters represent our connected and diverse eBay community – more than 100 million active users and 25 million sellers globally and growing.

The eBay logo is known the world over, so changing it was not a decision made lightly. The time felt right. We’re incredibly proud of how eBay started and quickly grew into the world’s largest online marketplace. Auction-style listings, used goods, vintage items and quirky, one-of-a-kind finds are still a big part of what makes buying and selling on eBay special. We hope that’s always true. But we’ve evolved a lot in the past few years, and eBay is much more than auction-style listings today."

Table of Content and Hooligan Help Imagine The Day Cancer is Cured

New York-based advertising upstart Interplanetary recently tapped Table of Content and Hooligan to help create two spots for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). "Today” (:60) and “Soccer” (:30) were directed by Rick Knief and edited by Eric Carlson.

The brand image campaign serves as a call to action with the promising hope of a cancer cure — thanks to treatments advanced by LLS. The spots will broadcast on network and cable stations across the nation on donated airtime. Actor Michael C. Hall (Dexter), a Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor himself, narrated the spots.

“The creatives (Bruce Lee, Jill Mcclabb, and Chris Parker) and agency producer Terry Debonis were all open and collaborative throughout the process and a joy to work with,” remarks Rick Knief, director, Table of Content. “And by teaming up with Hooligan, and having TANQ handle all the graphics and visual effects, it was one-stop shopping for Interplanetary.”

"Interplanetary has a lot of great editors and directors in their rolodex, so we were honored that they turned to us for such an inspiring campaign,” adds Eric Carlson, senior editor/partner, Hooligan.

“Today” imagines a day everyone hopes to remember: the day cancer is cured. Big news (not yet revealed to the viewer) sweeps across the city, halting everyday moments in homes, laundromats, diners, offices, gyms and train stations. Crowds gravitate towards TVs, computers and cell phones before the spot’s big reveal: a newspaper headline reading, “CANCER CURED!” The news culminates on a Times Square billboard before the closing montage shows various characters celebrating and embracing with loved ones afflicted by cancer.

Filming “Today,” Knief aspired to capture emotions of an ordinary day becoming extraordinary.

“The vignettes needed to tell the back story of an average day, while at the same time, intrigue viewers leading up to the big news,” he explains. “I shot at 40 frames per second to give the piece a heightened reality. We all want to imagine a day when cancer is cured, what it would be like, and how it will affect us emotionally.”

“Some of these moments could have played out the whole 60 seconds,” Carlson expounds on editing the spot. “I just tried to find little eye movements, or maybe a hand gesture to best capture each emotion. The big-picture goal was communicating the weight of the coming news through all the various reactions before revealing what it actually was. We held it as late as possible to let the quietness of the imagery develop and draw the viewer in.”

"Eric’s knack for finding the best moments and organizing them in a way that allowed us to experiment and explore was critical to making these spots shine,” adds Knief. “It also made for a smooth collaboration bringing Interplanetary into the editing process.”

“It was a fun day for the crew and all of the kids,” Knief recalls. “We shot at 270 frames per second to capture and emphasize the intensity of the kids playing. The languid feeling of the images really allowed for the message, delivered through graphics and voiceover, to come through loud and clear.”

Reflecting on directing a positive campaign for such an important cause, Knief describes it as an experience he and his production team will always remember:

“This job was profoundly close to me both professionally and personally,” concludes Knief. “With myself, and many others involved with this campaign, having lost loved ones to cancer, we all came out of the job inspired with the promising hope for a cure one day.”
