  • Toronto Ad Agency Red Urban Converts Historic Casa Loma Stables Into A Butcher Shop and Hang A Pair Of Jettas

Toronto Ad Agency Red Urban Converts Historic Casa Loma Stables Into A Butcher Shop and Hang A Pair Of Jettas

Press: What if you could buy a new car alongside your everyday groceries? This is the scenario imagined in Volkswagen’s latest spot to promote the affordability of the Volkswagen brand and its most accessible model, the Jetta.

“Butcher”, which began airing this month, opens with a woman ordering four sirloin steaks in a traditional food market. She then asks, “How fresh is the Jetta?” just as she would while contemplating a roast or rack of lamb. The camera then pulls back to reveal two silver Volkswagen Jettas dangling and gently swaying behind the counter from the market’s ceiling. After briefly considering the affordable price, she spontaneously decides to buy the “one on the left”.

View “How to Hang a Jetta” — a behind-the-scenes of the spot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_58EBCceAw

The spot, developed by Toronto-based agency Red Urban for Volkswagen Canada and directed by Untitled Films’ Jean-Michel Ravon, is an extension of a campaign launched late last year in the UK.

Since the impulse buy is familiar to most shoppers, communicating the brand’s message was easy. Executing the creative idea, however, was much trickier. Key to the spot’s believability was finding a location where two cars — at roughly 3,000 pounds apiece — could be hung from the wall or ceiling. Since Volkswagen Canada’s spots avoid using computer graphics as a way to reinforce Volkswagen’s authentic style, a very large space was needed.

“Choosing a location was tricky because we wanted the atmosphere to feel intimate, but the size of the vehicles ruled out small shop settings,” said Christina Yu, Executive Creative Director, Red Urban.

The stables of a downtown Toronto historical castle, Casa Loma, were eventually discovered and booked for the shoot. The stables provided a quaint space with high ceilings and authentic style details, like the subway-tiled walls so common in traditional food markets, which were a perfect backdrop for the concept of the shoot.

The next obstacle the team needed to overcome was hanging a hefty car from the ceiling in a way that looked seamless and believable.

“The big challenge was to hang the cars so that they would sway a little,” adds Yu. “To accomplish the stunt, we removed the engine, transmission and fluids from both vehicles to reduce the overall weight. A European trailer hook part was installed and reinforced before employing a custom rig solution to hoist the cars up inside the Casa Loma stables.”

Lynne Piette, Brand Marketing Manager at Volkswagen Canada, says, “We expect that the spot will resonate well with consumers as they begin the New Year. Providing a premium product and experience that's accessible to the masses is at the core of the Volkswagen brand, and this Jetta commercial represents exactly that.”

It's a Pepsi “Showdown”, with a verbal spar between New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and One Direction. A hilarious throw down of accolades ensues in the popularity contest over the coveted refreshment. The escalating standoff finally comes to a halt when 1D'’s Harry Styles offers Drew a place in the band in exchange for the Pepsi. • Volvo Trucks — "The Hook" Sacrifices Their President for a PR Stunt

Volvo Trucks — "The Hook" Sacrifices Their President for a PR Stunt

It’s been a long time coming, but today Volvo Trucks is back with ‘The Hook’ – the first in a series of videos to come from Volvo Trucks. This campaign is the continuation of amazing video-stunts from Volvo Trucks, as they once again put their trucks to never-before-seen-tests. Be On is proud to present this teaser video, and soon we will be bringing you more great content from Volvo Trucks.

Imagine a 15 tonne Volvo Truck dangling from its own towing hook, 20 meters above the water in Gothenburg harbor, Sweden. Then imagine standing on top of it.

This is the hook of the most recent video stunt from Volvo Trucks, staring the company President, Claes Nilsson as stuntman. Normally, heads of major companies stay behind their desks but not this one. Volvo Trucks wanted to put their newest construction truck to the ultimate test. And what better way to test the truck’s robustness, than to have the truck hoisted more than 20 meters up in the air and then stand on the front panel?

“Well, I have to admit I had butterflies in my tummy before the event. I’m no mountain-climber and I don’t like heights. But I’d promised to do the stunt so I couldn’t very well back out,” says Claes Nilsson.

This intense feature was shot from a helicopter and everything had been prepared in advance down to the tiniest detail.

“The idea behind the film – called ‘The Hook’ – is that we wanted to show that the truck’s front towing hook is dimensioned to handle far greater stresses than those to which it is normally subjected. It’s all about spotlighting the strength and quality of our construction trucks. And you can’t do that more clearly than by hoisting the 15 tonne truck up into the air via its own towing hook,” explains Claes Nilsson.

#TheHook is the first in a series of new, stunning and daring video stunts that will showcase the performance of Volvo Trucks’ models in ways never seen before. And Volvo Trucks knows how to make stunning stunts.

The viral video fans of the world will be reminded of ‘The Ballerina Stunt’ which was a spectacular viral success last year. In the film, record-holding highliner Faith Dickey battled to cross the line between two trucks driving at full speed.

Claes Nilsson reveals that there is much more to come from Volvo Trucks. He assures that the stunts coming this autumn are not any run-of-the-mill tests. These tests will show things that nobody in the truck world has ever done before! So stay tuned, you don’t want to miss this out.

  • "cärpe-díem mañana -The Hilfigers" | Tommy Hilfiger Multi-Media Ad Campaign

"cärpe-díem mañana -The Hilfigers" | Tommy Hilfiger Multi-Media Ad Campaign

The Tommy Hilfiger Group, which is wholly owned by PVH Corp. (NYSE: PVH), announces its Fall 2013 global advertising campaign, cärpe-díem mañana, featuring The Hilfigers – the beloved all-American family at the heart of the brand’s marketing strategy. The new campaign finds Chloe setting off for college, and when one of the The Hilfigers’ youngest moves on campus to start her first year, the whole group of eclectic characters tags along to help her settle in. The campus is teeming with new faces as several new characters join the family shenanigans.

Now in its seventh season, The Hilfigers campaign remains the ultimate personification of the preppy heritage and irreverent spirit of the Tommy Hilfiger brand. The campaign is photographed by Craig McDean, styled by Karl Templer and creatively directed by Trey Laird of Laird + Partners.

“Collegiate traditions and the preppy, Ivy League look were some of my earliest design inspirations and the starting point for our signature style,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “It was exciting to shoot this campaign at a location that embodies our brand heritage. There’s no better setting to highlight the collegiate prep inspirations, British sartorial influences and rich Anglo fabrics of the Fall 2013 runway collections.”

For Fall 2013, a select group of bloggers were invited to the campaign shoot where they were given behind the scenes access to the collection and Fall 2013 shoot. The bloggers were styled in looks from the collection before they were photographed alongside The Hilfigers, integrating these bloggers into the campaign experience and allowing them to develop exclusive content for their websites and social media channels. The bloggers announced the campaign to their global audiences just days before the images broke in September books.

Adding a new layer to the seasonal campaign, Lisa Birnbach, author of the The Official Preppy Handbook, created spirited, individualized head-to-toe descriptions for each character’s unique style that play on brand’s preppy-with-a-twist heritage. The quintessential cast of college characters includes the “Natty Professor,” the “A-Student,” the “Bookworm,” the “Ice Queen,” the “Après Dude,” the “Professional Student,” the “Social Chair,” the “Field Tripper,” the “Alum Prez,” the “Teacher’s Pet” and the “All American.” The head-to-toe images, accompanied by Lisa’s playful depictions, will be included in multi-page inserts in select September books, outdoor advertising and on tommy.com.

“Lisa Birnbach is a true prep connoisseur and the perfect person to characterize The Hilfigers’ unique prep style,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “I’ve loved working with Lisa throughout the years and we are excited to have her prep expertise included in this campaign season.”

“The Hilfigers continue to personify the global creative vision for the brand,” said Avery Baker, Chief Marketing Officer for The Tommy Hilfiger Group. “This season we’re incorporating new content elements that celebrate the brand’s history of infusing an unexpected twist to preppy tradition. Lisa Birnbach’s playful depictions of the family’s iconic prep style add further emphasis to the youthful irreverence that has long been at the heart of the Tommy Hilfiger brand, while our global blogger partnerships celebrate the increasingly international outlook of preppy style in a way only Tommy Hilfiger has achieved. The Hilfigers campaign resonates globally with our consumers now more than ever and we are excited to continue bringing fans of the brand engaging, shoppable content each season.”

Photographed in a preppy, collegiate setting with hair by Eugene Souleiman, and makeup by Mark Carrasquillo, the campaign features a similar cast of eclectic characters from past campaigns: Jacquelyn Jablonski, Bernard Fouquet, Chloe Blackshire, Arthur Kulkov, Julia Hafstrom, Lea Sorensen, Toni Garrn, Thomas Gledhill, Kim D, Sacha M'Baye, Tidiou M'Baye, Viggo Jonasson, Jourdan Dunn, Tian Yi and two Basset Hounds named Morgan IV and V. New additions to the family this season include Sasha Luss, Cora Emmanuel, Katya Riabinkina, Benjamin Eidem, RJ King and Marlon Teixeira.

“The heart of The Hilfigers campaigns is all about storytelling, and this season we really tried to take it to the next level,” said Trey Laird, Laird + Partners Chief Executive and Creative Officer. “With Chloe headed off to college, the whole clan descended on campus en masse! The university setting provided the ideal backdrop for not only that perfect fall collegiate feeling, but also new characters to bring it all to life.”

Cärpe-díem mañana will break worldwide Fall 2013 as a multi-media program with an online, print, outdoor and social media presence. The advertising campaign will break in September 2013 issues starting July 23 with full print ads running globally in key fashion publications such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, InStyle, ELLE, Glamour, GQ, Men’s Health and Esquire; multi-page inserts will be featured in select issues. New York City; key European cities such as London, Paris and Milan; and top districts in Hong Kong will have outdoor campaigns. Tommy.com and the brand’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube channels will feature the campaign images and video. For European consumers, a new feature on tommy.com will allow fans of the brand to seamlessly shop and discover the iconic Tommy Hilfiger products, collaborations and new collections.

The Seductive Heidi Klum as Mrs Robinson for Carl's Jr. and Hardee's

So Carl's Jr. and Hardee's are launching the Jim Beam Bourbon Burger with a new commercial starring Supermodel Heidi Klum. Klum takes on the iconic role of Mrs. Robinson in the new ad for the Jim Beam Bourbon Burger, inspired by the classic coming-of-age movie The Graduate. Created by Los Angeles- and Amsterdam-based creative agency 72andSunny, the commercial, titled “Mrs. Robinson,” depicts Heidi tempting a naive younger man with this indulgent burger. The commercial will begin airing nationally on March 25, until then a behind the scenes clip is all we have.

    Press via:
In yet another fast food first, Carl’s Jr.® and Hardee’s® will begin selling burgers with the distinctive taste of a branded, distilled spirit when they introduce the new Jim Beam® Bourbon Burger this week. A mature burger for mature tastes, the Jim Beam Bourbon Burger features rich and tangy sauce flavored with Jim Beam bourbon – the world’s No. 1-selling bourbon – crispy onion straws, two strips of bacon, pepper-Jack cheese, lettuce and tomato, all atop a charbroiled beef patty and served on a sesame seed bun. The Jim Beam Bourbon Burger is available now at all Hardee’s restaurants and at all Carl’s Jr. locations starting tomorrow.

“Higher-end restaurants have long served menu items flavored with branded spirits but, until now, they had yet to find their way onto fast food menus and we considered it our mission to change that,” said Brad Haley, chief marketing officer for Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s. “The sweet, smoky flavors of Jim Beam bourbon go really well with the great taste of a charbroiled burger, and the folks at Jim Beam were just as excited about the pairing as we were. While there is no residual alcohol in the sauce, that wonderful bourbon taste remains and is enhanced by the smoky flavors of bacon, the spice of pepper-Jack cheese, the salty-crunch of crispy onion straws, and fresh lettuce and tomato. And, who better to help us promote this burger for grown-up tastes than the incomparable Heidi Klum?”

The Jim Beam Bourbon Burger is available as an entrée for $3.59 or as a combo meal with fries and a drink for $6.09 at Carl’s Jr. and $5.59 at Hardee’s. Prices may vary by location.

Supermodel Heidi Klum takes on the iconic role of Mrs. Robinson in the new commercial for the Jim Beam Bourbon Burger, inspired by the classic coming-of-age movie The Graduate. Created by Los Angeles- and Amsterdam-based creative agency 72andSunny, the commercial, titled “Mrs. Robinson,” depicts Heidi tempting a naive younger man with this indulgent burger. The commercial will begin airing nationally on March 25.

“For Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, paying homage to this iconic movie moment is an appropriately fun and irreverent way to introduce the mature taste of bourbon to hungry guys,” said Glenn Cole, founding partner and CCO at 72andSunny. "In casting the new Mrs. Robinson, we hoped to find someone with as much savvy, sophistication and sex appeal as the original Mrs. Robinson. In Heidi Klum, we got a wildly successful producer, businesswoman, TV host and one of the most iconic supermodels of all time. Not a bad day at the office."

“The Bourbon Burger is no ordinary burger. It was truly the star of this commercial and I was proud to play the supporting role,” said Klum. “I’m not sure who had more touch-ups – me with the hair and lip gloss or the Bourbon Burger with the readjusting of the lettuce, spritzing of the tomatoes and fluffing of the bun.”

  • Scion FR-S "Bringing the Sport Back to the Car" TV Commercial

Scion and global creative agency ATTIK are literally putting the pedal to the metal in the youth-focused automotive brand's national cross-media launch campaign for the all-new, 200hp, rear-wheel drive 2013 Scion FR-S sports coupe. Today, the brand and agency executives are very proud to detail their new "Driving is Back" campaign, which is currently debuting numerous advertising placements across the country. "Scion is extremely excited about the launch of the FR-S," said Jack Hollis, Vice President, Scion. "The rear-wheel drive sports car is the brand's halo car that pound-for-pound and dollar-for-dollar, is igniting the passions of a whole new group of driving enthusiasts.

Together with our partners at ATTIK, we are absolutely thrilled to kick-off the campaign inviting everyone to rediscover the fun of driving with the FR-S." "In this campaign, the radical new FR-S itself is first and foremost," began ATTIK co-founder and executive creative director Simon Needham. "To us, there are very few exciting cars out there that are also practical on some level… and the FR-S gets great gas mileage while maximizing performance. So naturally, our campaign demonstrates the power and handling of this amazing car – most often in the hands of drifting champ and renowned racing driver Ken Gushi, who drove the car in many of the exciting driving scenes. Across every campaign facet, our overall goals are to excite, inspire, drive people to explore the FR-S online and get them into dealerships and behind the wheel." The "Driving is Back" campaign was conceived by ATTIK's creative director Ron Lim, art director Mike Cornell and copywriter Andy Sciamanna, and its out-of-home elements are now live in 40 locations in 26 major U.S. markets.
Today, the first of three: 30 spots will break… not only on young adult-targeted cable outlets where viewers are accustomed to seeing Scion ads, but also via NBCU syndication, and on NBC, Fox and every major sports network. First comes "Bringing the Sport Back to the Car," which will begin and end a three-month TV buy. Different campaign spots will appear between June 25 and August 5, and more video ads (all commercials and videos were directed by Needham) will run on the brand's social media channels and website well into September. In print, the first spreads will begin to appear mid-June in Sports Illustrated, Maxim, Motor Trend, and Men's Journal, among many others. Banner placements are also blanketing most standard and some new targets for the brand starting today. "Since the FR-S is Scion's biggest push into the sport coupe market yet, we wanted to extend our reach beyond our typical media channels," Lim explained. "This car already has a lot of buzz around it, and we are aiming to build on that excitement. Of course, television is still a powerful mass medium. We also chose mainstream automotive pubs for the first time. Our campaign is much heavier in details than usual as well. We're psyched about our specs and so are the automotive tastemakers; it was important to reach enthusiasts this time out. Andy and Mike really sold the experience of driving the FR-S." Lim also shared insights into some of the more innovative media tactics the campaign will introduce in July. "We're also using smartphone apps to invite readers to watch the FR-S in action through Digimarc codes embedded in the print. Using their smart phones, consumers will be able to peek under the hood of the FR-S and see it in action. This is a great way to feature the very emotional driving experience within a static print ad." According to Lim, Scion and ATTIK chose Digimarc technology due to its successful integration with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue earlier this year, citing its track record, its powerful security features, and its ability to seamlessly present video as part of the agency's print ad, which is entitled Video Test Drive. That ad is scheduled to run in the July 9 issue of Sports Illustrated. Finally, Scion's and ATTIK's executives are also putting the finishing touches on a powerful iAd that will appear in targeted apps for the iPhone and iPad and allow viewers to view videos and explore more features of the FR-S in amazing detail.
The brand and agency once again have many leading technology, creative, production and post-production partners to thank for their campaign contributions. Among those are commercial production company Blueyed Pictures, editorial company Lost Planet, CGI/VFX company Brewster Parsons, and music company Squeak E. Clean Productions. For ATTIK, additional credits include senior broadcast producer Patty Lum and senior account manager Michelle O'Hea, to name but a few.

  • Bringing the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF)

Bringing the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF)

    500 Days of Summer

Everyone loves a good biff, especially when it has absolutely nothing to do with The Footy Show. Here, I’m speaking about the one and only Brisbane International Film Festival also known as BIFF. The Gold Coast, being the cultural vacuum that it is, us film geeks eagerly await the annual BIFF where a selection of films from around the world are screened over the course of one and a bit weeks. This year I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the BIFF crew by putting together articles on various films for the website and daily newsletter. With dozens of movies crammed into the 11-day event it would be easy to miss some of the real gems. The good news is I’ve taken a look at the complete line-up of films screening at this year's festival and even watched some of them early. So, the following is my list of the films you MUST SEE or die at this year's BIFF.

For you international readers this can be a handy guide of limited release films you should keep an eye out for in the coming weeks/months.

    • An Education — the opening night film starring Peter Sarsgaard and set in the 60s. The Sars-man in a film with romance, drama and intrigue sounds like too rare an opportunity to miss.
    • BALIBO — the notorious tale of five young, Australian journalists who were executed while reporting on Indonesia’s invasion of East Timor in 75. An impressive Aussie cast including Gyton Grantley, Nathan Phillips and Anthony LaPaglia expose the Australian and Indonesian governments shameless efforts to cover-up this important story.
    • Coraline — has been covered extensively on this blog given its beautiful visuals and dark storyline. Directed by Henry Selick, director of the classic Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline follows the adventures of a young girl who discovers a secret door leading to an alternative reality.
    • 500 Days of Summer — a last minute addition to the festival line-up, this quirky, nontraditional love story deserves to be seen purely because it features the talents of my favourite Joseph Gordon Levitt. It also stars everyone’s favourite indie film star Zoey Deschanel.
    • CHE: Parts One & Two — director Steven Soderbergh’s stunning two-part opus based on the life Che Guevara and starring Benicio Del Toro in the title role. You’ll be hard pressed to catch this screened back to back anywhere else in Queensland.
    • Away We Go — highly peculiar, yet, interesting film which looks at the journey of two thirtsomethings who discover they’re going to have a baby. Instead of settling down and preparing, the couple take to the road to visit old friends. This is the latest thing from the amicable Sam Mendes and marks a return to his off-beat indie roots.
    • The September Issue — one of the most anticipated documentaries of the year, this film delves into the life of legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in the lead-up to the massive September issue.
    • Jules And Jim — this French film from the 60s is a classic love-triangle with arguably the most recognisable face in French cinema — Jeanne Moreau.
    • Moon — one of the films I’m most looking forward to, this sci-fi thriller i s the debut feature from David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones and stars Sam Rockwell in what is said to be the performance of his career.
    • The Missing Person — a private detective is hired to follow a missing person but what started as a simple job rapidly develops into a complex mystery. Full of double-crosses and classic noir moments, this is a film not to be missed by lovers of all things noir.
    • The Strength of Water (below) — having Maori parentage, I like to pay special attention to films from indigenous New Zealand filmmakers. The Strength of Water is definitely worth the gaze. A unique look at the complexity of grief through the eyes of a 10-year-old living in an isolated Maori community. Beautiful, naturalistic, creative and moving. A must-see.
    • Van Dieman’s Land — the infamous tale of Australia’s very own Hannibal Lecter gets the big screen treatment from a filmmaker heading for the stratosphere.Subdivison — Brisbanite Ash Bradman (from Nova radio fame) wrote and stars in this appealing comedy set in semirural Hervey Bay. Fans of Aussie films like Crackerjack, The Castle and Kenny are likely to enjoy this.
    • The Cove — along with Cathy Henkel’s The Burning Season, this has to be one of the most important documentaries of the year and looks at the culling of dolphins in the picturesque town of Tokyo, Japan. Part horror film, part espionage thriller and part environmental documentary, The Cove is all part's essential viewing. It Might Get Loud — there’s no time for air guitar in this documentary which takes the audience on a candid trip into the world of three of rock’s most iconic electric guitarists; Jimmy Page (Led Zepplin), the Edge (U2), and Jack White (The White Stripes).
    • Black Dynamite — if I even have to explain to you the plot of this film, given the sheer volume of posts about it on this blog, then you deserve to be pimp-slapped into a China cabinet. Here’s your chance to see what all the fuss is about.
    • Dead Snow — Tarantino and Rodriguez fans, like myself, are likely to adore the work of the Norwegian lads behind this low-budget, horror slapstick about Nazi zombies. Writer/director Tommy Wirkola and writer/star Stig Frode Henriksen have been pipped for big things since their debut short Kill Buljo and their first feature doesn’t disappoint. Catch their work before it explodes as their next film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters has been picked up by The Weinstein Company (bada-boom).
    • Storage — a tense, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller from Brisbane filmmaker Michael Craft and starring Gold Coast actor Matt Scully in the lead role. An impressively clever debut from Craft who shot the film in storage facilities in and around Brisvegas. Creepy.
    • The Horsemen — containing what is said to be one of the `most amazing fight scenes captured’ is there really any other reason to see this?

Ticket prices are cheap as chips compared to a normal outing at the movies and BIFF is running a series of workshops where you can meet the director, producer, writer and/or stars of some of the films.

3 New Foot Locker Approved Ads Featuring NBA Stars Bosh, Love, Harden and Westbrook

Carmelo Anthony hires a team of "extra Melos" to wear all his Approved Foot Locker gear at the same time in the new Foot Locker TV ad. The Tear Away commercial featuring James Harden and Russell Westbrook with the mustard is below.

James Harden likes to keep his Approved Foot Locker gear fresh. Russell Westbrook tests the limits of that dedication. So he always wears more than one. The Beard wins. Approved.

The third commercial entitled "Yacht" features Westbrook, Harden, Love and even Chris Bosh is the best of the Foot Locker ads.

Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Kevin Love are sporting new Foot Locker Approved gear. There's no way they're getting it wet. Chris Bosh wants to see how far they'll go.

And finally, here is a quick behind the scenes video of the four NBA stars from the making of the "Approved" spot.

Behind The Scenes With "Goat For Sale" Doritos 2013 Crash The Super Bowl Ad

A look behind the scenes at one of five finalists in the 2013 Doritos Crash The Super Bowl ads contest: "Goat For Sale". The ad was created by Ben Callner, listen in on Ben talking about how the ad came to be and the Goat, who's name is actually Moose.

The scream from the goat (soon to be the most famous screaming goat the world has ever heard) is actually Ben's friend Kieth from Savanna who in my opinion nails the scream that just might win these guys the contest.

  • "Scorched" 2013 Subaru BRZ TV Spot

"Scorched" 2013 Subaru BRZ TV Spot

The highly anticipated 2013 Subaru BRZ rear-wheel-drive sports coupe makes its debut in Canada with the launch of a new campaign ‘Scorched,’ and car aficionados and passionate drivers will agree, car porn has never looked so good.

Developed by DDB Canada’s Toronto office, the national campaign features a 60-second online film, ‘Scorched,’ shot with Phantom camera technology, creating extreme slow-motion shots. The suspenseful story unfolds inside a garage where an unknown source of heat melts everything in its path. Amplified by a dubstep track, “Execute” by Excision, the final shot reveals the heat source to be the Subaru BRZ emerging out of a drift, demonstrating that the BRZ handles as incredibly as it looks.

“The Subaru BRZ is a hot car, with a great deal of excitement already surrounding its release,” says Todd Mackie, creative director, DDB Canada. “We wanted to create a visual story to mirror that anticipation while captivating both existing fans and reaching new ones.”

Print, online, ambient, social media, public relations and targeted blogger outreach round out the campaign; each highlighting the sizzling sports coupe. Selectmedia and bloggers also got the opportunity to feed their gear head inside by attending the ‘Scorched’ shoot, to get a rare, behind-the-scenes peek at the Subaru BRZ in action.

“This is Subaru’s first rear-wheel drive sports coupe and with limited quantities available in Canada this year, it’s the most highly anticipated launch in the category,” says Geoff Craig, director of marketing, Subaru Canada. “We challenged DDB to accelerate the buzz and launch the BRZ with creative that’s just as hot as the car.”

A hologram lenticular in The Grid and attention-grabbing creative in national newspapers and magazines reveals the BRZ burning through the pages. Similarly, online advertising burns up computer screens and tablets to unveil the hot new sports car.

The Subaru BRZ turned heads at the 2012 Montreal Grand Prix (June 8-10), with an ambient street-art installation produced by DDB Public Relations. The BRZ was showcased as part of an eye-popping, movie-style set featuring a burnt mailbox, singed bike rack, melted street lamp and a massive 32’ heat-blasted brick wall. The result was a surreal replica of a Montreal street corner that appeared to have been utterly “scorched” by the hot new sports car.

To enhance the installation DDB Public Relations engagedCanadian NFC tech firm, TAPmeTAGS Inc. to provide NFC enabled tags as part of a test-pilot program to encourage consumer interaction onsite. Singed wild postings surrounding the installation encouraged passersby to “tap or snap” using their NFC phones. This directed consumers to a dedicated BRZ landing page where they could learn more about the vehicle, view images and book a test drive.

The Montreal ambient installation is the first of a series, with more coming to major cities across Canada this summer.

Model Irina Shayk and Javier Bardem star in the film which is basically a luxurious home full of lingerie clad women and Javier, of course it's all just a dream.

    Behind the scenes...

Delve behind the scenes of L'Agent's Autumn Winter 2013 Campaign — Penelope Cruz's directorial debut starring Mónica Cruz, Miguel Angel and Irina Shayk.

The Autumn Winter 2013 campaign is a highly--charged, voyeuristic experience from the viewpoint of our leading man Miguel Angel. When he dons his L'Agent sunglasses he's instantly gratified with a view of the party as everyone would wish to behold it — sans clothes. As he cruises from one room to the next, suddenly every woman at the party is seen just as God intended: wearing only L'Agent lingerie.

Suddenly the music drops and something catches our handsome protagonist's eye. Slowly, sensually descending the stairs in vertiginous heels is the hottest girl at the party — Irina Shayk.

The Audi Quattro Experience "Painting Coconuts"

With the release of a documentary short film today, Zulu Alpha Kilo and Audi Canada have put the final touches on the Audi quattro® Experience. This one-of-a-kind interactive installation put participants in the driver’s seat of a custom-made 1:32 scale Audi A4 quattro® slot car for the chance to test their on-track skills.

Using the world’s first iPad enabled slot car controller, visitors to the installation were able to take their A4 for a wild test-drive around hairpin turns, down long highway straightaways and through icy mountain passes – terrain that would get the better of lesser vehicles.

The project involved a number of innovations to marry the worlds of slot car racing and technology with the Audi brand:

•A handcrafted 140 sq. ft. (20’ by 7’) custom slot car track
•3D printed 2013 Audi A4 vehicle shells fit with Audi quattro® all wheel drive slot car chassis and custom in-car cameras
•Custom iPad app integrating live in-car camera feed and digital voltage modulator to control vehicle acceleration
•High definition bird’s eye view race cam with integrated Facebook, Twitter and YouTube share function

The track also included this brilliant billboard...nice.
The film, entitled “Painting Coconuts”, captures the entire build through the eyes of track maker David Beattie of Slot Mods USA. Set behind the scenes leading up to launch of the Audi quattro Experience, the film offers a unique look into Beattie’s personal story, his passion for the art of custom track design and the sport of slot car racing. It also delves into his process and the challenges his team faced to execute a project with so many innovative features. The film was directed by Tamir Moscovici (Urban Outlaw) of Industry Films.

Zak Mroueh, President and Executive Creative Director of Zulu Alpha Kilo, said, “This was the perfect opportunity for us to reimagine what a test drive could be, and bring a truly unique and memorable experience to Audi fans.”

  • Becel’s “Love Letter” Reminds Moms To Take Care Of Themselves Too

Becel’s “Love Letter” Reminds Moms To Take Care Of Themselves Too

To get women to make heart healthy choices and reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke, Becel and The Heart and Stroke Foundation invited moms to what they thought was a regular school play. Instead, each kid read their mom a personal, heartfelt letter explaining how well she takes care of them. Moms were then asked to take care of themselves too. Developed by DDB Canada's Toronto office, the integrated campaign encourages women to take better care of their health. Full press below.

Toronto, January 24, 2013 — Heart disease and stroke is a leading cause of death for women in Canada1, yet 80 per cent of the risks can be reduced through lifestyle changes. To encourage women to prioritize their own well-being, Becel® recently launched a heartwarming integrated advertising campaign encouraging moms to take action and take better care of their health.

Becel® is the founding sponsor of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s The Heart Truth™ campaign, which calls on women to put their own health first by assessing their risk for heart disease and stroke, talking to their doctor, and making heart healthy lifestyle choices in order to enjoy a long and healthy life with their loved ones.

“Heart disease and stroke take one in three Canadian women before their time2, resulting in too many children losing their mothers,” says Margaret McKellar, senior marketing manager – Spreads Canada. “Becel wants to drive home the relevance of heart disease and stroke with women and provide them with the tools necessary to make positive changes in their lives.”

With moms more likely to listen to their children than a marketing message, Becel® enlisted the help of elementary school students of an Ottawa public school to surprise their moms by reading aloud heartfelt letters explaining, in their own words, how well their mothers take care of them. The emotional live event created in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, was filmed for the campaign.

“Women put too much pressure on themselves and sometimes are so focused on the health and happiness of their family that their own health is sacrificed,” says Denise Rossetto, mother of twins and creative director at DDB Canada. “If a woman doesn’t look after herself, she may not be around for her family.”

Developed by DDB Canada’s Toronto office, the national integrated campaign, includes English and French versions of the spot “Love Letters,” an online video, entitled “It’s OK Mom” that people can personalize to encourage a mom and share with their social networks, and digital advertising, which is being supported with public relations and a blogger outreach program. To learn heart healthy tips, get a behind-the-scenes look of the commercial and read the children’s love letters, consumers can visit the campaign site: Becel.ca/EncourageAMom.

The campaign is the result of collaboration between Becel’s agency partners, with DDB Canada’s Toronto office responsible for the strategy, mass, digital and social executions, working closely with DDB Canada Montreal (French adaptation), Edelman (public relations and social media), Mindshare (media), Integrated (shopper marketing) and Ariad Communications (eblast), in partnership with Sapient who is responsible for Becel.ca.

The “Love Letters” TV spot launched on January 21, 2013, followed by cinema and digital campaign elements in market the first week in February for Heart Month.

DDB Canada has partnered with Unilever Canada as Becel’s agency of record since 2009.

  • Lexus Unveils The Lexus Fashion Workshop

Lexus Unveils The Lexus Fashion Workshop

In an artistic twist on recycling, Lexus challenged four of today's most exciting designers to create innovative fashion items using parts from the Lexus CT 200h (a car that is 90 percent recyclable). The designers created jewelry, clothing, shoes and a very dramatic and Gaga-esque headpiece from gaskets, floor mats and hose clamps.

The Lexus Fashion Workshop will appear in the January 2012 issue of Vogue, on newsstands this week.

Elevating the notion of recycling to an art form, Lexus challenged four of fashion’s most inventive designers to rethink their notions of automotive design for an advertising campaign to appear in Vogue. Using some of the more than 2,000 individual parts of a completely dismantled Lexus CT hybrid, a vehicle that is 90 percent recyclable*, the designers created fashionable works of art as part of The Lexus Fashion Workshop.

From crank bearings to exhaust gaskets, the designers took on the challenge with verve, turning some of the best engineered auto parts into innovative fashion accessories – all while driving home the beauty of recycling.

·“Environmental Crown of Virtue”—A truly head-turning piece designed by Moss Lipow using a transmission starter and exhaust manifold gasket.
·“The Valve Collection”—Designed by jewelry creator Eddie Borgo using valve lifters, crank bearings and hose clamps.
·“Nomadic Sanctuary”—A sleek trench coat, shorts and clutch designed by John Patrick, featuring floor mats made from plant-based plastic, sustainable sound-dampening material, wire harness, leather seat covers and cargo covers
    · “The Luna Shoe”—Created by Alejandro Ingelmo using armrest leather trim and clear plastic tubing.

“Merging the worlds of luxury automobiles, art and fashion is another example of how Lexus is 'Engineering Amazing' or maybe more appropriately, 'Engineering Unexpected',” said Brian Smith, vice president of marketing for Lexus. “We were able to challenge four designers to turn one of our most progressive hybrid vehicles into innovative fashion pieces, inspiring the designers, and the world, to see things differently.”

The four pieces will be highlighted in a six-page advertisement in the January 2012 issue of Vogue.Behind-the-scenes videos of the Lexus CT hybrid being dismantled piece-by-piece are available at Vogue.com/Promotions/Lexus. Additionally, a series of exclusive interviews with the four designers will be posted throughout December.
