  • Jeep "Whole Again" Super Bowl Commercial

Jeep "Whole Again" Super Bowl Commercial

For last two years, Chrysler has created quite a buzz with their Super Bowl advertisements. In 2011, their “Made in Detroit” commercial featuring Eminem was particularly well received, as was their 2012 Clint Eastwood-narrated “Halftime in America” spot. As a result, many were anxiously waiting to see what the automaker had up its sleeves for this year’s game. Predictably, Chrysler continued the tradition of tugging on the heartstrings of the American public with their fan favorite “Farmer” and “Whole Again” commercials.

Featuring the narration of Oprah Winfrey and opening with her words, “We wait. We hope. We Pray. Until You’re Home Again,” on the screen, Chrysler’s “Whole Again” commercial is an advertisement for their Jeep brand—more specifically—for the partnership between Jeep and the United Service Organizations (USO). Throughout the two minute spot, the commercial depicts military families going about their lives while missing their loved ones who are overseas on active duty. The message Oprah relays is that like military families, the United States, as a nation, will not be whole again until all of our service men and women return home. Until then, however, Jeep—through its partnership with the USO—proudly supports “our nation’s heroes.”

As Chrysler well knows, patriotism is the one emotion that unites like nothing else. In fact, it’s hard to resist a commercial like this—one that celebrates the sacrifices that service families make—especially when those sacrifices are so clearly depicted on screen. The question remains, however, as to whether it’s right to capitalize on these sacrifices. Though it’s easy to forget, Chrysler’s main purpose behind the “Whole Again” commercial is to sell more Jeeps. And while their secondary purpose may very well be to advertise their partnership with the USO or even to give the USO some free publicity, presumably, they’re only doing this to sell more Jeeps as well.

Regardless of Chrysler’s true motivation, for a brief moment, the “Whole Again” commercial brought our attention back to America’s real heroes and away from the athletes who are too often idolized as such. For doing that, and for not featuring a Jeep until at least midway through the ad, we’re thankful and are already looking forward to next year’s Chrysler commercials.

  • Kevin Spacey for American Airlines "The Individual " Ad Campaign

Kevin Spacey for American Airlines "The Individual " Ad Campaign

Kevin Spacey is brilliant in the new ad campaign for American Airlines created by the ad agency McCann, London, enjoy a sneak peek of the spot set to air in a couple of days.

    Official Press Release:
Kevin Spacey, the Academy Award-winning actor, takes on three new roles as part of a campaign to promote American Airline’s unique brand philosophy of understanding the individual flyer.

The 60-second ad ‘The Individual’ breaks on UK television on 12th November.
Kevin Spacey appears as a slick designer type, a creative screen writer and a Malibu family guy and finally as himself in the series of ads.
Director Chris Palmer of Gorgeous who’s previous work included the Skoda ‘Baking Of....’ and the Budweiser ‘Lyrics’ ad, worked closely with Kevin Spacey in developing and bringing to life the three characters who reflect the broad American Airlines premium flyer demographic.
American Airlines is tapping into the rich values associated with ‘Modern America’; egalitarianism, primacy of the individual and the impeccable but informal approach to customer service.
All the characters are united at the end of the film in their appreciation of American Airlines understanding ‘what makes me, me, whoever I happen to be.
Two additional 20 second ads bring the proposition to life. ‘Multiple Meals’ shows the three characters having distinctive dining habits, all of which are accommodated by American Airline’s ‘Dine Upon Request’ service. In ‘Multiple Boarding’, the characters are shown checking in their various ways, from a traditional boarding pass to a smartphone option.
The campaign is backed by out-of-home advertising and digital activity which has also been created by McCann, and ties in with American Airline’s evolved ‘discerning flyers’ strategy, developed to widen American’s appeal, to be more inclusive of a wider audience for First and Business.
The first screening of the Advertisement on TV will break on UK television on 12th November at 6.05 pm on ITV1 during the International Football match between England and Spain.

Maria Sebastian, Vice President, Sales and Marketing EMEA at American Airlines comments:
We believe that this new campaign is an exciting development for American Airlines as we have Kevin Spacey creating a number of unique characters purely for our campaign. It’s interesting and engaging – but crucially, it also conveys our service ethos, treating discerning customers as individuals.”

Geoff Smith and Simon Butler, Co-Creative Directors at McCann London, said of working with Spacey: “The casting of Kevin Spacey for the trio of roles was crucial to the emotional appeal of this ad, and his performance really lifts it to a higher level. He manages to combine an everyman quality with an indefinable touch of class, which sits seamlessly with the ‘discerning flyers’ message that the ad conveys.”

Chris Palmer says: “Kevin Spacey really nailed the characters, as you'd expect. I can't imagine any other living actor who could have transformed into such diverse and believable characters. It was weird shooting with him as a totally different character each day. The crew didn't recognise him when he came on set, even on the third day. You completely forgot it was Kevin Spacey in there. In fact, it was a bit of shock to see him as himself on day four.”

  • London Street Graffiti Is Spell Checked by Online Tutor Firm

London Street Graffiti Is Spell Checked by Online Tutor Firm

Brand activation agency Arc London has created a campaign that sees London's graffiti get a spellcheck, in aid of tuition service The Tutor Crowd.

Spelling and grammatical mistakes in graffiti around London have inspired a new tongue-in-cheek campaign by Arc, a division of the Leo Burnett Group, for the online English tuition service The Tutor Crowd.

The campaign shows the offending graffiti on walls, toilet doors and public areas around London corrected with paint pens and stickers. The stickers direct children and their parents to The Tutor Crowd’s online service for a free English tuition trial.

As well as highlighting the need for English tuition, the work aims to debunk the myth that it’s stuffy, old-fashioned and expensive, repositioning it as online and available from expert tutors anytime and anywhere.

The campaign, called “Take The Classroom To The Streets”, is running outdoor across London, in areas including Shoreditch, Old Street, Brick Lane, South Bank and Camden and will appear online at thetutorcrowd.tumblr.com
The work, which breaks online this week, and was written and art directed by Dan Kennard and Ben Smith.

Patrick Wilson, founder of The Tutor Crowd, said: “Good spelling and grammar is fundamentally important to young people. But teaching it doesn’t have to be old fashioned and stuffy. We wanted to engage parents and young people alike, and make them realise that online tuition is an option that’s available to try.”

Beri Cheetham, Executive Creative Director at Arc said: “To change the traditional perception of English tuition, we needed a non-traditional approach. It’s tongue-in-cheek, free and makes people smile. But most importantly, we hope it helps young people engage in grammar and spelling and get support they need.”

  • Gun Control PSA — "How Many More Rounds?"

Gun Control PSA — "How Many More Rounds?"

Moms Demand Action has launched a new ad campaign to drive support for new and stronger gun laws in America in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. The video, "How many more rounds?," is an emotive depiction of the damage caused by gun violence. An AR-15 assault weapon is fired in slow motion with each discharged shell casing representing a major shooting in America. The video ends with the message, "How many more rounds are we going to let this go on for?" along with a phone number to the Congress switchboard.
Story via: SUSAN KRASHINSKY | The Globe and Mail — Shell casings from a black AR-15 rifle spin in slow-motion flight. Each one is labelled with the name of a school or a city where a mass shooting has taken place: Columbine; Carson City; Virginia Tech; Aurora and Minneapolis and Brookfield and Newtown.
This new television ad wades into the debate over gun legislation in the United States at a crucial time, as the Senate prepares to vote Thursday on President Barack Obama’s proposals to stem gun violence. But the agency behind it is located in Canada.

Grey Canada has been working with a newly formed group seeking to brand itself as the Mothers Against Drunk Driving of the gun debate: Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The partnership came about after chief creative officer Patrick Scissons, on vacation south of the border over Christmas, saw a news segment with Shannon Watts, the founder of the group that at the time was called One Million Moms for Gun Control.
Mr. Scissons was moved to reach out to Ms. Watts and ask whether she needed help with the cause. From that conversation, Grey landed on the pitch list for agencies and then secured the account to do pro bono advertising work – something nearly every agency does for a select portfolio of causes.
The group’s first television campaign will launch on networks such as CNN and MSNBC and in smaller markets as the group’s members lobby for time on local stations.
Ms. Watts says she was inspired by the MADD brand.
“It really changed the culture and the perceptions around driving while intoxicated,” she said. “There’s an important role moms play in touching the emotions of America.”
As the group gained traction, Grey did a number of smaller promotions, including one involving a typically Canadian perspective. Noting that the popular candy Kinder Surprise Eggs are banned in the U.S. – because of the alleged choking hazard – the Canadian advertising team worked up an Easter campaign sending eggs to Anderson Cooper and other news personalities. The point was that there are more limits on Kinder eggs in the U.S. than there are on the purchase of assault rifles.
The group’s influence has been growing, which Ms. Watts attributes to the power of social media. Since it was launched in December, it now has roughly 90,000 members in 90 chapters across the U.S. On March 28, some members were invited to the White House to stand on stage while the President spoke about gun legislation.
The new ad is darker than the Easter campaign – the images of shell casings are accompanied by audio of 9-1-1 calls, news reports and solemn presidential addresses about shooting incidents, and the voices of parents whose children have been killed.
The organization’s goals include background checks for gun purchases, a ban on assault weapons, and the tracking and regulation of ammunition sales in large quantities. It is funded by the members and by online donations.
The gun debate is not only a focus for the Canadian office of Grey Group, which is a multinational firm; in a meeting last fall, Mr. Scissons and Tor Myhren, chief creative officer and president of Grey New York, discussed it as an issue deserving consideration.
For agencies, these types of free public service announcements are a creative opportunity as well.
“You talk about agencies really wanting to do breakthrough work, work that strikes a chord emotionally and really motivates public opinion, the public service space is obviously the greatest area for that,” Mr. Scissons said. “Any profile it brings the agency based on the success of that work is great. But on a personal standpoint, feeling a connection and being passionate about the cause, it’s infectious within a shop.”

Winkreative Takes Us UP In "Travel Happy" Spot For Metrolinx

Winkreative and Guru Studio take you UP to Toronto with "Travel Happy," a playful and colourful animated journey through Toronto for the Union Pearson Express.

Coming to Toronto in 2015, the Union Person Express, or UP as it’s been lovingly coined, is a new high-speed train that will connect the city’s downtown core to the international airport. As Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America, this service is long overdue and a welcomed addition to the world class city.

Working with Winkreative and illustrator Lotta Nieminen, Toronto-based Guru Studio set about to weave a colourful populated visual narrative out of the imagined “Union to Pearson” trip from the script. As Winkreative and Lotta Nieminen are London and New York-based, Guru Studio’s immediate goal was to educate and inspire the team with local knowledge about what makes the city of Toronto unique, so it would look great on screen. Guru Studio also brought on board Toronto-based director Larissa Ulisko, to further strengthen their vision and bring the culture of Toronto to life.

“We worked with Winkreative to balance the script with the visuals so we could allow some space to breathe life into the spot,” said Frank Falcone, Creative Director, Guru Studio. “We felt that we needed to keep the graphics and animation style very clear and simple so we wouldn’t overwhelm the viewer.”

“Travel Happy” is a stylish and informative trip through Toronto, and although the express train isn’t coming to Toronto until 2015, promotions for the service have already begun via the UP website where the webfilm lives.

  • New Ads for NewYork-Presbyterian Feature Special Ops Officer

New Ads for NewYork-Presbyterian Feature Special Ops Officer

NEW YORK, NY—As one of the nation’s top academic medical centers, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is well known for the latest in innovative clinical research and advanced medical treatments. What was not well understood, however, was the way its doctors, nurses and staff routinely go above and beyond to care for their patients before, during and after surgery. In fact, many people believed quite the opposite was true. This esprit de corps is critical to what these individuals do every day, and has resulted in countless incredible medical outcomes for patients and their families.
To showcase this remarkable standard of care, Munn Rabôt asked real patients to share their inspiring stories in television commercials for NewYork-Presbyterian as part of the hospital’s “Amazing Things Are Happening Here” campaign, introduced in 2011. To select patients, Munn Rabôt uses a comprehensive screening process where patient cases supplied by the hospital are reviewed, and patients are then interviewed in consideration for the final filming of the ads. In order to truly emotionally engage the viewer with these stories of extraordinary personal and medical care, we use 60-second ads so that these narratives can completely unfold.

As we’ve learned throughout the duration of the “Amazing Things” campaign, no two stories are the same, and any patient could have an unbelievable experience to share. One such patient we met who had a compelling story was retired Lieutenant Colonel John O’Brien. Now 52, John had served four tours as a Special Operations officer in the Middle East. The recipient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service to his country, John is without a doubt an American hero—but not without a cost.
As John explained during our in-depth interview, the horrors seen during war can leave both the mind and the body ravaged. Over 500,000 United States participants in the Middle East conflicts may suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and John O’Brien is one of them. As Munn Rabôt’s CEO, Orson Munn, states, “Many of these individuals are severely wounded, and, while it is not as apparent as a missing limb, having PTSD can be just as crippling and disabling.”
Confronting the terrors of war—especially when returning home after four tours—takes an entirely new kind of bravery and courage. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has been working diligently to pioneer new medical and virtual therapies to help those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. According to Munn, once he heard that the hospital was leading a clinical trial to help returning soldiers cope with PTSD, he “wanted to get the word out” because “these people have served our country to protect our freedom—the least we can do is give them the help they need and the support they deserve.”
NewYork-Presbyterian will launch five advertisements beginning April 29th accompanied by an online microsite featuring retired Lieutenant Colonel John O’Brien and his medical team, Drs. JoAnn Difede and Judith Cukor. With these unique ads, NewYork-Presbyterian and Munn Rabôt draw awareness to the common biases associated with seeking mental health treatment. Lt. O’Brien unmasks the stigma associated with PTSD treatment—the perception that seeking therapy means you’re “weak.” In the candid, engaging manner that the “Amazing Things” campaign is known for, John explains his struggles with PTSD and his treatment at NewYork-Presbyterian: “[It’s] brought me to a point in my life where I can really start to move on and do the things I want to do.

  • Volkswagen and Google Get Ready To Launch "Smileage"

Volkswagen and Google Get Ready To Launch "Smileage"

Last year Google started a program to partner with advertisers and agencies to re-imagine how brands tell stories in a connected world. Project Re: Brief set out to recreate some of the advertising industry’s most iconic, classic campaigns using the latest technology tools. This year Google is expanding that program to work with some of today’s most iconic brands and innovative marketers, in it's newest project: Art, Copy & Code.

Art, Copy & Code is a series of projects and experiments to show how creativity and technology can work hand in hand. Some of these will include familiar brands like Volkswagen, Burberry and adidas—projects developed in partnership with their creative teams and agencies. Others will be creative experiments with innovative filmmakers, creative directors and technologists to explore how brands can connect with consumers through a whole range of digital tools—including ads, mobile apps and social experiences. Google's first partner project is a new social driving experience, The Volkswagen Smileage.

Building off VW's 2012 campaign, "It’s not the miles, it’s how you live them," (video clip below if you have yet to see it) Volkswagen Smileage is a mobile app and web service that aims to add a little bit of fun to every drive, from your daily commutes to holiday road trips. The app measures the fun factor of each trip using a metric called “smileage,” based on signals like weather, traffic, location, time and social interactions (e.g., a long drive on a sunny Saturday afternoon might accumulate more smileage than a morning commute in the snow). You can use it with any car, not just Volkswagens.

Powered by the new Google+ sign-in, you can choose to share Smileage experience with friends and family. For example, during a road trip, photos and videos taken by you and your co-passengers can be automatically added to a live interactive map. The inspiration for the service came from a recent study showing that every day, 144 million Americans on average spend 52 minutes in a car—76 percent of them alone; making that time a more shareable experience. Volkswagen Smileage will be available soon in beta.

  • William Shatner in the Priceline Negotiator's Last Deal Commercial

William Shatner in the Priceline Negotiator's Last Deal Commercial

William Shatner is the star of the newest Priceline commercial, but this ad is going over to well with the American Bus Association. They are asking the ad be pulled from being aired, apparently seeing Shatner in a bus as it goes over a bridge that ends in a rather dramatic explosion isn't good for the bus biz.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The American Bus Association is asking that Priceline pull an ad that shows its longtime spokesman William Shatner dying in a fiery bus explosion, saying that it believes the ad is in bad taste.

The ad, which started airing Monday, is an effort by the online travel service to drum up attention for its published-price offering, which is much less well known than its name-your-own-price service.

A company spokesman stressed that while they are killing off Shatner's "Priceline Negotiator" character, they still have the former "Star Trek" star under contact as a celebrity spokesman.

But while Priceline is happy with the spot and the buzz surrounding it, the trade group, which represents inter-city bus lines as well as charter bus services, is upset, saying it "damages the reputation of our industry."

Group spokesman Dan Ronan concedes that he doubts any potential customers will be afraid to take the bus after seeing the spot, but said "it portrays the industry in a bad light. We're protecting our brand and our reputation."

Neither Priceline nor Shatner had any immediate response to the group's objection.

The trade group also invited the 80-year old Shatner to ride a motorcoach and see how safe and comfortable they are. It pointed out that Shatner will be appearing next month in an autobiographical one-man show on Broadway, where a large proportion of customers travel by bus.

"In fact, it is estimated that nearly one third of theater tickets are purchased by group tour and motorcoach customers," said the group's statement

  • Mercedes Benz Smart — An Unexpected Test Drive BBDO

Mercedes Benz Smart — An Unexpected Test Drive BBDO

    Challenge:
The once elusive, now strongly emerging Russian middle class still prefers big, expensive cars, an obvious proof of its social success. Although most of them are in dire need of a second car, our potential customers showed virtually no interest in our Smarts.
Our objective was to bring the most reluctant consumers to test drive the Smart and change their state of mind from “Smart is not really a car” into being true believers and advocates of the Smart.

    Solution:
Our secret weapon: once you take the Smart for a ride, you’ll fall in love with it.
Core audience’s weakest point: their big cars and all the problems they bring along.

    Context:
Most illegally parked cars in Moscow are picked-up during the weekend shopping. Once car-less, drivers go through a real ordeal – exorbitant, hours long cab rides through Moscow’s traffic, in order to get back their cars.

    Idea:
At the peak of the driver’s desperation, the Smart Teams jump in, offering free rides, a unique opportunity to test drive the versatile Smart in some of the World’s worst traffic jams.

Being there for them exactly at the moment when they needed a car the most turned reluctant, condescending consumers into true believers – a 100% realistic test drive of the very car that could have saved them from all the hustle.

B.C based ad agency Eclipse Creative creates the Shrinking Mortgage for Island Savings — Island Savings Introduces the ‘Incredible Shrinking Mortgage’ to the Island. A Mortgage so revolutionary it will move you to party!

VICTORIA, BC June 6, 2013 — The rewards and benefits of Island Saving’s Incredible Shrinking Mortgage are undeniable, exceptional and a true leader in the market. A product so revolutionary, it’s liable to move people to celebration because of its unique step down feature.

Island Savings is putting a fun spin on mortgages with a playful “Mortgage Party” campaign running on Vancouver Island from April to the end of June. To emphasize the benefits of their new Incredible Shrinking Mortgage, Eclipse Creative has taken traditional forms of media and put an innovative twist on them. Their interactive stunt TSA, bursting flex form print ad, 3-dimensional mall posters, Facebook app, video-scribe pre-roll video, flash ads and creative bus ads with a party hat extension show that their new mortgage will give customers a reason to party!

“Mortgages can be such a daunting commitment,” notes Jason Dauphinee, Creative Director at Eclipse Creative.

“With this revolutionary product we wanted to get people excited about these great features. By truly thinking differently, Island Savings has allowed us to help grow their brand in a smart, honest and engaging way.”

Island Savings has also found a way to give back to the Vancouver Island community through the campaign and remain true to their core brand values. Their Facebook contest allows visitors to select an Island housing charity to receive $1 with their entry.

“We’re always looking at how we can support the vitality of the communities where both our members and employees live and work,” says Bronwyn Dunbar, Senior Manager of Marketing & Community Investment, Island Savings.

“With the launch of our new mortgage product, we saw alignment with Island housing charities that our research shows continue to need support.”
